I am hoping to get over to Fuengirola in Spain for a couple of weeks for some winter sun. Any help/hints/tips on bars to go (esp for the match on Saturday and next couple of weeks), good places to eat/drink, any good nights out - quiz nights etc. Day trips out (hiring a car/ Also taking the clubs to play a few games of golf. Dos and don'ts etc.

Also any hints on how to access mu UK online betting accounts whilst over there. I seem to recall having a problem last time I was there. I fancy us for a 3-1 win on Saturday and I'd hate to lose out

Thanks

I’ve gone for a 3-1 also, with Paddy Power at 80/1.

Parents lived there till 2016 there was the seasiders bar rear of hotel paramedes so see if its still there I also used to drink in Dolphin bar in fish alley. Plenty of resturants to try in fish alley . Thers also an irish bar in fish alley showed plenty of football. Enjoy

A few kms down the coast is one of my favourite beaches - Cabopino. Definitely worth a visit. Nice beach bar with natural sand dunes behind rather than tower blocks. Just one word of caution, the further you go down the beach the more people switch from their swimming suits to their birthday suits....

Many moons ago, Torrequebrada was a lovely course to play, tho there are other golf clubs closer to Fuengirola

I'm not a big fan of Fuengirola, the centre is far too busy for my liking and if you have a car good luck in finding a parking space, fish alley does have a great choice in restaurants as there are a lot of competition meaning the prices are cheap. Torrequeberada is still a great course but it should be for what they charge per round. As mentioned a bit further down the coast is Cabopino and also Mijas Costa, they're more my cup of tea, smaller and more peaceful resorts with some lovely bars and restaurants not to mention both have great beaches, however at this time of the year they may be pretty quiet. There is a very good train service from Malaga airport to Fuengirola and it goes the other way in to Malaga city, it's well worth a trip for a days shopping and sight seeing, the old town also has some great tapas bars. Enjoy.

Ignore fish alley and head for the tapas bars the Spanish go to. Lots of decent ones, esp in the area behind the post office and the other side of the main square, near the theatre. The London sports bar on the prom, near the harbour, great for footy.

The London Sports Bar brings back some memories 👍

Went in September, did a few nights in mijas and a few in malaga. Spent a day in fuengirola and like others say wasn't that impressed. Around the harbour there's loads of small bars and restaurants and on the prom to the right of the harbour were the big English pubs. Found a great little bar that was great value at the theatre, it's in a little square and not full of drunken English!!!

Sorry , but having stayed or visited nearly all the resorts on that stretch of coast, Fuengirola is the most unappealing . A bit soulless I'm afraid .

I agree. I quite liked Benalmadena and Torremolinas but was not impressed with Fuengirola at all. I got a taxi to there from Benalmadena. Had a wander around for a couple of hours (until the next bus back was due). Soulless, featureless . . . bland and uninspiring. 🤷

While we waited to get back we ended up eating at a Moroccan owned cafe and the owner shortchanged me of €10 with some elaborate hand trick. Luckily I spotted that she had slipped it up her sleeve as she was making a big display of counting the money into my palm and staring fixedly into my eyes to distract me. That put me off the place, which I know some will say why? But it just did.

Another here who’s not a fan of Fuengirola. Got the bus there from Benalmadena for a day out but wasn’t impressed at all TBH. Each to their own though as l know people who think it’s great.

The end of Fuengirola near the castle (going towards Mijas Costa) is different to the other end and can even feel quite Spanish. Just try to stay away from all the bloody Brits.

Fuengirola is generally quite at this time of year.
Three Irish bars in fish alley location all showing live sports.
British pub too. Think it is the Brittania pub.
As mentioned, just a couple minutes walk from Fish Alley you will see where the locals eat.

I know the area really well and can concur with SG's post above, forget fish ally and go to the Tapas bars behind the post office, there are some fantastic restaurants there and that is where the locals eat.

If you have a car, and if you haven't make sure you change your mind and get one. Head along the coast for 10 minutes and go to La Cala which is fantastic. Plenty of free parking and some amazing restaurants. For traditional Spanish go to Los Porches, my favourite restaurant in the area, waiter/owners are great, very friendly and good sense of humour. 90% Spanish eat there, make sure you have their fish soup as a starter is is fantastic. Their Fillet Steaks are the best I have had anywhere, but the do plenty of traditional dishes. No one goes out to eat until about 9pm there too so bare the in mind if you want atmosphere etc., There are also some great restaurants off the main drag in amongst the roads and the beach there is fab. If they are open, at lunchtime, go to one of the bar/restaurants on the beech and have some Squid and Sardines cooked over wood, fantastic with a sale and a couple of beers.

Tikus Tapas bar in La Cala is fantastic too.

For a really nice nigh out a drive up past La Cala Golf up the mountains (20 minute drive from Fuengirola) there is El Jinete, An amazing setting and actually great for lunch too on a nice sunny day. Food is excellent, good value (They do a really good 3 course set menu, they also have chilled live music most nights, it's closed on Fridays, which I always thought was an odd night.

You will love it, just avoid the areas in Fuengirola where it is like Blackpool prom, I don't know about you but I wouldn't want to go and eat in a place called the Wigan pub!!!

We’ve literally just arrived back home from Torremolinos. The weather has been cold and windy the past few days but looks to improve from this weekend on.
I wouldn’t worry about taking many euro’s as most places operate via contactless card. We only took a little bit of cash to leave a tip after our meals.
It’s very quiet in general too. We went to Benalmádena one afternoon and there weren’t many people around, although the weather could have impacted that.
As for day trips, we were hoping to do the Caminito Del Rey walk but due to the wind we thought better of it. You’ve got the zoo in Fuengirola as well.
There’s also various local park areas to visit in Costa Del Sol which are free.
As for transportation, we always catch the train (Renfe) which is directly opposite the airport. A single ticket is just over 2 euros.
If you enjoy shopping there’s a big outlet at Plaza Major, it’s got all the big brands there and at the moment there’s still the January sales on. You can spend hours (and many euros) there !
I couldn’t place any bets on my uk Bet365 account while I was in Spain. Either place your bets before you leave or let someone you trust access your account in the uk and place bets on your behalf.
There wasn’t any hassle at the airports either. Just make sure you have your PLF (passenger locator form) and proof of your covid vaccinations and you’ll be fine.
Enjoy your holiday, and I hope you get better weather than we had 😊

We have a little place in El Faro (20yrs now) & eat locally in Playa Marina, La Cala etc, a lot of info above is very good, & contrary to some, I love Fwengy, a town a bit like Blackpool, there is something for everyone. Personally I avoid the front & usually eat a little back from the places with pictures of the food.

If you can try to get a Malaga game in!! it very cheap (depending on who they are playing) the stadium is very modern & even tho they are in La Liga second division, they still get 14-16k crowds Last game I went to bought tickets online & cost less than 30euros for 3 or us!! & the prematch, atmosphere is totally different to the UK, bars are full, people having tapas etc. Sadly they got tanked 5 nil at home last week.

Car hire since COVID, has become a lot more expensive.... but still essential...

Golf, despite major construction at the entrance, El Chaparral is my favourite, but a short drive inland to La Cala Golf, give you 3, 18hole courses.. Avoid Mijas Golf,

If you need any specific info, message me, as we do know the area very well.

I am going back years ago me and my mate rented a car and had a great sesh in gibraltor and bought a load of cigarettes
It was pesetos but if you paid in sterling you got a great deal happy dayz

Thanks all for the advice and tips (and warnings). We got here OMK and it was surprisingly easy through the airports. Hired a car for a couple of weeks, and played golf today at Marbella G & C club with a society we had previously hooked up with. Then went back to Biddy Mulligans in Mijas Costa which was nice.

We have been over here a few times before, but I was keen to get views of others as I'm sure we have been missing out on some treats, and you have highlighted quite a few things we have missed.. we have rented a house in Fuengirola near the beach which is really roomy, and best of all has all the Sky Sports and Movies. I know what you mean about cheap and cheerful, and bit bit tacky in places, but I love being able to have an early morning walk/jog along the prom in warmish weather. It was a bit breezy today but 18 degrees and we played golf in shirt sleeved.

We are hoping to play golf at Santana, Miraflores, Cabopino, La Cala and Mijas (another society) over the next couple of week.

I'll report back on some stuff if people are interested.

I’m currently in Torremolinos and my local bar will have the Pool match on if you fancy the trip up here.
