FULL MATCH | BARROW V BLACKPOOL.(Highlights times included).

The first thing I noticed was the amount of movement from our players. Things are looking up.

Just watched - night and day from preseason last year, we look organised, genuinely calm in possession a bit too much dicking around with the ball in our defensive third - better teams than barrow might exploit that but we didn't look rushed in the way we have in the past. We genuinely look to be a bit more adventurous going forward.
It's only barrow, it's only pre season but the signs so far look quite good.

I have watched most of it and saw enough to know the players know what they are supposed to be doing.
I agree it's night and day from last season and I may bring myself to abbreviate Critchley's surname soon😜.....

"Too much dicking around with the ball in our defensive third..."

It's a Neil Critchley team.

Finally watching it. Few observations

First goal: what a great bit of play that was. Trybull and Morgan keeping the ball alive, Pennington comfortable in possession then a belting ball by Trybull to find Virtue’s clever run

Second goal: don’t think you’ll see Lavery nodding in from corners too often this season, but good delivery by Morgan and nice movement by the bigger lads to pull their defence out of position

Still sceptical about the three at the back, but did notice Hubby (especially) stepping out and getting involved further up the field, which gives it a slightly different dimension

Also quietly impressed by Dale dropping off into space, turning, pulling people out of position etc. He’s got a lot to prove this season. (Edit to add: but Apter played the role better).

Thompson looked more comfortable out wide and benefited from Hubby and Morgan getting around him. Still capable of a misplaced pass, poor positioning or dodgy tackle tho.

Second half we could’ve easily had three before Beesley’s goal. Apter and Carey causing utter chaos. Another good corner in the build up as well.

Not entirely sure what formation we were playing? More like a back four in possession becoming a five when out?

Lankshear looks a good player. Big, athletic, good touch. Not sure whether he’ll ultimately be a left-back or a left-sided central defender. Not ready to play every week but should be around the squad.

Barrow came into it a little after their flurry of subs but the young defenders didn’t look too troubled.

Goal four a bit of a defensive calamity, but well taken.

Penalty wasn’t much of anything. Fair to say Beesley won’t be first in line as taker this season!

Goal five was nicely done, Norburn stepping forward and causing them problems.

So starting line up as it stands?
Grimmy
Pennington
Marv
Hubby
Lyons
Thompson
Norburn??
Virtue??
Carey??
Apter
Lavery

Arguably all six midfielders deserve to play. Maybe Kenny did the least?

In terms of recruitment, we could certainly do with something else in that second striker role.

Being greedy, a good, strong left-sided central defender would help. Di’shon Bernard did well at Portsmouth last season and still isn’t fixed up after leaving Manchester United …

Maybe a left-wing back on loan until Gabriel is fit and Lyons can switch?

thought Hubby played some really clever balls through to the forward runners, and his crossing was significantly better than it has been.

I couldnt work out formations either, seems that we have a certain amount of flexibility to change, which if we cant work it out from the stands or the TV might be very problematic for oppostition players in the moment.

we are still playing routines from the back which a decent opposition coach might work out, as a couple of teams did in the first year in the champs, but the players seem significantly more comfortable on the ball than in previous years.

be interesting to see how we do against hibs, which will be more of a test

Unless Virtue has developed massively from his spell at Lincoln, I would have Trybull, Dougall and Morgan ahead of him although I haven't seen Morgan yet.

My team if have to play 3-5-2.

-------------------Grimshaw-----------
--------Pennington--Ekpiteta-----Husband---------
Lyons--------------------------------------Thompson
-------------Trybull---Norburn--------------
-----------------Carey-----------------------
-------------Lavery-----Joseph---------------

The midfield is really up for grabs though as Dougall, Morgan and Virtue could easily be picked if playing well.

dont think id have thompson in there, husband out to the left side and one of either connolly, casey, or Tharme in the cb berth,

seems at the moment better with a back four really or possibly CJ if we are going with wing backs.

i have to admit in the midfield we seem to have numerous options, whether that be more attacking, more defensive, more ball playing, more geared towards pace, or more towards box to box players. the forward line does seem to be a bit lightweight but there seems to be goals in the midfielders, if the average was 4 to five from the midfielders, and the defenders like Lyons, Marv, Tharme, Casey chipping in with ten or so we are three fifths the way to an 80ish goal haul, which is where we should be for a promotion push. three attackers getting 30 between them in a season isnt an unrealistic expectation. shane looks very lively, although his hold up play isnt as good as jerry's was, he makes really good runs and hes strong and quick, could bag himself twenty quite easily. Beesley looks a handful at set plays if nothing else, and he seems to have a bit more about him than just that.

Just my personal opinion but having Husband as a wing back would completely ruin a 5-3-2 / 3-5-2 formation. If anything, he should have a John Stones type role where he supports the midfield from a central defensive position.

maybe,

maybe critchley can rebuild thompsons confidence because he did look a half decent player when he first arrived but the headless chicken management of appleton turned him into a liability.
