Gary Briggs Fact

My good mate was living in Oxford at the time. when he heard we were signing Briggsy, he just said, he's a nutter, you'll love him.

Right on both counts

He played for Oxford against Man United in Alex Ferguson’s first game in charge. Oxford won 2-0.
Looking back I always thought that must've been a wow signing, to sign a player who had won the League Cup only 3 years before, but it was a different era. You would be hard pushed to find any player nowadays who plays in the Premier League dropping into League One, unless they are spunked some Wrexham type money at them.

Back then the highest-paid player was John Barnes £ 10,000 a week, I suspect Dave Bamber was on about £ 2000 a week with bonuses. So roughly 5 times that amount. The average premier league player would have been on 4-5000 per week.

Hyland at Man City is on £ 900,000 a week which is probably 90 times the highest Blackpool players wage last season in the championship.
Briggs was a top signing, and he had perfected the art of heading the ball while at the same time headbutting the other team's centre forward. 😀
