George Bancroft

There's a runner today in the 1.20 at Ffos Las by the name of George Bancroft.
Unusual naming a horse directly after a person like that, I wonder if anyone knows anything about why whoever named it chose that?
Anyway it's not without a chance but is up against a pretty hot odds-on favourite...I'm not recommending a bet, just its name caught my eye and I wondered if anyone had any info

A quick google tells me he was a 19th century US Democratic big wig who ended up i charge of the US Navy ( George the man not the horse ) no idea of the connection though

Many years ago their was a local builder called George Bancroft. I remember he had a son called Roy who nicked my girlfriend.

The George Bancroft I'm on about is the former Blackpool Council leader...they named the park behind Bloomfield Road after him. The horse is currently owned by the Irish owner JP McManus, I'm just wondering if it was named after our George Bancroft, and if so, why?

A lot of JP's horses are named after historical figures.
Cant make the connection though.
