Grant Ward receives racial abuse on Instagram

What's awful from Instagram's point of view - there is no easy way to report the account. Only Grant could report the message - and you can't report it for the content they're following - even if it's screaming pedo.

I'm glad it's been referred to the police and hopefully something can be done if it's not a bot.

There’s an easy way. They have capability to filter, search and take action on posts. They just don’t. Social media seems to find it very easy to block and ‘copyrighted’ videos like match highlights, though.
 
Massive support for the lad on Social media, ironically. Great player, fantastic performance last night, hope he is Ok.

I think I worded it wrong. I meant that it's bad Instagram doesn't let a user like me report him. Your point is true they don't do nearly enough with the tools they have it's ridiculous.
 
Its disgusting. Absolutely can't stand stuff like that. I ** hope its not one of our fans, the general consensus among us is that if it is hes getting a kicking.

I looked at the account and its just weird, it looks like some dodgy spam account ran by sad fucker half way across the world that has nowt better to do.
 
Looks like Instagram have done their usual of removing the account. Which doesn't solve the issue at all. The person behind that account and all those who do this sort of thing, should IMO be named and shamed. Then dealt with in whatever way that is.

RR, I think we all commend your research on the issue. At times, you just have to shrug your shoulders. It is annoying that we are impotent at resolving this problem, whilst those with the power and training/knowledge to do something about it do not appear to do so.

It might not be purely social media's fault but if anyone were to spout this stuff at a ground NOW they would be lead out, prosecuted, and send down. Same needs to happen for online abuse. Simple.

They haven't removed the account. Whoever is running it has changed the name. It's now "nameless2190" and they've made it private. Makes me think it isn't a bot but actually is a racist pedophile.

What a lovely combination of qualities.

I think you have to start holding social media accountable to the same standards as print media.

If a paper published a letter from someone racially abusing someone in the letters page, that would be clearly out of order. Just saying "oh, we didn't have time to check" wouldn't wash either.

Yes, you root out the individual, but ultimately as Alf says right at the beginning, you don't simply make someone not racist by fining them or whatever.. What is arguably as worrying or more morally concerning is that social media companies make a considerable amount of money on the back of our use.

It doesn't really matter what we post, whether I market a shite football blog, talk about rainbows and unicorns or express racial hatred. It's all the same to twitter/Instagram etc as I keep seeing the ads and the money keeps rolling in.

These mediums have destroyed other media (papers, broadcast TV etc) and yet are not held to anything like the same standards.

I bet you couldnt watch mastermind last night because all the finalists were white....not because of colour but because they were better....just as why Alex Dyer was a pro footballer and I wasn't....I wasn't good enough, he was...he was picked I wasn't. Not because he was black, because he was really good....youre the one who sees colour and ...you are part of the problem.

I did watch the Mastermind final and didn’t consider the colour of the finalists for an instant ...... yet apparently you did. As for complaining that I turn everything into racism on a thread about the racial abuse of Grant Ward, the mind boggles

My first name is Gordon so obviously after the song I’m a moron, Then there is Gordon the gopher both at the time did my head in but in the song there is a line that says “ he’s more than a man than you’ll ever be 234 “ so I used that a few times and it soon stopped. Looking back as I’m an old so and so when I was a kid it was meant as fun but now it’s more hurtful.
 
A lot has been said here and I think all are in agreement that this is disgusting and unacceptable. That said we should now just move on and let the authorities deal with it if they have a will to do that. GW knows that he has the full support of the Club and the fans and I hope that helps him deal with it. The only way to address this is for the players to carry on doing what they are doing well, which is the best way to show this person that he/she is a non-entity.

Everyone feels dislike, or even worse, to opposing players when your team has just lost.
However, what sort of a mind comes out with racial abuse to an opposition player just because he's had a superb
game against your team?
In some way I feel sorry for the morons who come out like that.
They must live in an awful world of their own making. Poor, miserable b@st@rds.

Not sure. It was my girlfriend who pointed it out to me - it's definitely the same guy though. I messaged him some choice words before he changed his name and if I go into my messages it now shows that new username. Also he has the same following/follower/number of post stats. Instagram probably are just not doing anything.

The fact that he’s changed his name shows he’s well aware of what he’s done. If he’s abroad I doubt that our police can do anything and as for Instagram it’s clear that the more controversial you are the more money they make. They should be forced to give money made from these accounts to charity to disincentivise them from keeping them up.
