Pretty certain that was a similar format in England for the first season it was introduced
 
Yeah it was. I seem to remember Chelsea played Charlton. I'd actually quite like a return to that format for the last promotion place.
In terms of a EPL/Championship playoff, the EPL team would win at least 7 out of 10.

Thats around the average in the Bundesliga play off.

I don’t think it’s a good idea at all.

I can't remember ever seeing the 2nd tier team overcome the top tier side over 2 games. There must be quite a gap between the two leagues.

Hamburg fans celebrated promotion on the pitch last game of the season only for their closest rivals to score 2 goals in injury time to snatch promotion from them. They must be gutted to not have even gone up via the Play Offs.
