Handbags

That's preposterous. Fascinating article in the Guardian this morning showing that most people in UK think Black Lives Matters has aggravated racial tension, including a lot of black people. The 'thought police' are causing havoc, too many of them have made good careers on it.

At this rate we’re going to have change the whole of our vocabulary, there must be thousands of sayings that could potentially offend someone!

The Jonathan Pie character did a great piece on this on YouTube. We have become scared to speak because of the woke left. The only time people can have their voices heard without fear of offense it at the ballot box. And when the people vote and elect right wing parties the woke left simply cannot understand why. It's a vicious circle.

Apologies if this has already been posted
A pundit on radio Lincolnshire has been suspended after describing a scuffle between players as "handbags"
Is this now the world we live in ?
If so stop the ride I want to get off
There are thousands of genuine reasons to be concerned in this life but FFS someone saying handbags isn't one of them

ridiculous.

I notice the link is to the sun newspaper so I’ll reserve judgement on this until I’ve heard the full story. If true it’s clearly nonsense but I’m sure there’s a bit more to it than just using the word ‘handbag’.

The person who suspended this bloke should be made public, I bet they get hugged to death at the next woke party they attend.
But language evolves. And if 'handbags' has come to mean a minor scuffle between sports men, what an interesting philological development.
Caesar non supra grammaticos, after all.

It's in every paper, but I'm not gonna believe it unless it's in the Guardian 🤣

From Collins Dictionary

“handbags
in British English
(ˈhændˌbæɡz )

PLURAL NOUN
facetious
an incident in which people, esp sportsmen, fight or threaten to fight, but without real intent to inflict harm (esp in the phrases handbags at dawn, handbags at twenty paces, etc)”

Someone should complain.
🤔

All very sad to hear but the guy should have been a national council member of the Football Supporters Association, because you're allowed to use abusive insults and also misogynist comments regarding women.

If he had said manbags would it have been acceptable?
waiting for a popular song to be changed manbags and gladrags 🤣

Whether or not Handbags is an appropriate phrase (I think the vast majority of people would have no problem with this commonly used football phrase) what I am astounded about is how the BBC have dealt with it. Suspension is a serious step and one where an individual has potentially committed a serious offence, usually against another individual or been suspected of theft, fraud etc. This cannot possibly fall within that category and could have been dealt with in a much more sensible and measured manner. And as others have said above, will Chissy and Brett now be supended as they have used the same phrase? Perhaps the BBC managers and HR staff should be aware of the football context these commentators are working in before proceeding with this nonsense

It makes you wonder who complained. Must be a football fan if they were listening to commentary on a Lincoln v Swindon game.
How do they survive a normal match day?

Very sinister and frightening times. And if we cannot debate things now how can we make any meaning advances in the future. These few idiots need plucking out now. They are causing division in society.

There was woman on Chaser this week who had 36 handbags. If she won she was going to get another expensive one. 🙄
What the F*** does she do with 37 handbags?

I guess as a freelancer he has no rights . Doesn’t help dealing with real language issues, it just makes them look farcical

The minute we start suspending people over 1 complaint for a non existent problem, then we’ve lost all grip on reality.

The BBC along with Sky want to be seen to be the ones spearheading this “progressive” thinking. Just a case of saying the wrong thing at the wrong time and you will be made an example of.
