Hayden Coulson signs on loan

He only got 19 league starts at Aberdeen last season in a full season loan, and ended up on the right of midfield. I'm not sure how he fits in but I guess one or two will be leaving. I can only think that Critch feels short of left sided defenders and the January options are limited.

Was it last time under Critchley we had a running joke about signing left backs, as we seemed obsessed with the position?

Answered your own question there- bring on the inverted wing back!

The current squad list on the EFL site names 20 players. It excludes Doug Tharme and obviously the new boy. Not many spaces left for players over 21.

Critchley clearly doesn't rate Dom Thompson. That much has been clear since the pre-season friendly against Hibs where he was extremely frustrated with him.

Welcome to the seaside HC.

I imagine it’s quite hard to come in to a new team in January. You’ve got to learn a lot in a short time and make a fast impression to get a look in.

Obviously signed to be a left wing back which is disappointing as indicates Critchley has no intention of switching from wing back system.

Sounds positive

"He must have recovered from being almost knocked out when he attempted to chest control that ball then.

Looked so out of place when he came on Saturday night, but good luck to the lad. "

Aberdeen fans seem to say he had a few good games in the 30 he played. How many a few means is anyone's guess. As for his spell at Peterborough, their fans seem united in how poor he was. We've heard it all before though, let's judge the lad in a tangerine shirt and get right behind him.
Stephen Crainey was shite according to Leed's fans...

I think Thompson is expendable, sadly. I suspect he may be loaned out. Of course Dale and Lyons have been playing on the left, its a bit confusing .

As I posted on the other thread about this signing he could be cover for Husband as he's no competition for the left of the 3.
5 ft 11 so that would make sense.

Thompson set off like a house on fire when he arrived but then unfortunately the mistakes started to come and he still has a few in his locker!
Agreed TB but I think we should try and take his mistakes “out of his locker”
He started in the Championship and seemed quite happy at that level initially.
I’m a bit surprised at this loan to be honest but I don’t claim to know as much as the manager. (Unlike too many on this forum for my liking but…hey Ho!!!)
UTMP 🧡

We need a centre mid if Kenny is going, a centre back if Marv is off and a centre forward and we sign a left back/midfielder 🤷‍♂️

He’s only here sixth months and doesn’t really fit our supposed mandate of improving what we have or addressing our shortcomings.

Hmmm. I don't really get this one tbh. We seem to have the position covered unless as has been said its cover for Jimmy. Seems a bit of a wasted loan to me. I suppose the lwb position has been chopped and changed a lot so maybe Critch isn't convinced by any of them who have played there.

Clueless, but got us a draw at a prem side, got us promoted and stable in the Championship. Now rebuilding with the strongest home record in the league.

Frustrating maybe, but I wouldn’t say ‘clueless’ is accurate.
Nor would I say promotion was all Critchley's own work. Calderwood's input was immeasurable...as was McCall's during our 'stable' period.
Currently a very good home record and a pitiful away record.

I agree with all of that.

I’m still wondering if we’re not bringing in a decent number two due to a budgeting decision.

I can't see it being down to budget. In theory the 2 NC has now would probably be in and around the cost of a decent No 2.

More likely NC has stated he doesn't need a No 2 as he's learnt so much since his first spell or even he'd only sign if he had NO no 2.

Too late for an exp. No 2 now. It wouldn't work.

Learn a lot…like how to hit the long ball to the opposition 🫢
