How long....?

Can the country manage without a PM?

I fully accept BJ has been very ill and needs time to recover. As an individual he needs to rest as long as it takes, and I’m sure most of us wish him well on a personal level.

But equally the country and many of its citizens are also very ill.

So how long can the country go on without leadership?

He’ll be back in a week or so. If he’s good enough to be out of hospital I’m sure he can send and read emails and take phone calls. Just cos he isn’t in the public eye doesn’t mean he isn’t still pulling the strings

That's why we need a formal Deputy PM, not a de facto stand-in. In 1963 Johnson became President after Kennedy was killed. We need that to be an official position, bearing in mind that we don't elect PMs, they are appointed.

Do you fancy a ton on this thread? 😉
Probably not 😂

But it’s a fair question.

There are some huge decisions that need to be taken quickly.

The economy is on the brink of a meltdown with thousands of otherwise viable businesses about to go under, leaving tens of thousands unemployed.

But if we end the lockdown too soon there’ll potentially be a second wave far worse than the first.

Meanwhile we have a Cabinet split and debating the above but without a leader.

Hence the op.

Don't under-estimate just how much this disease will have taken out of him, physically as well as mentally. That said, he will be back like a shot if he thinks the sharks are circling.

Well, he's phoned Trump, or was it Trumpton, this afternoon, so he's Oven Ready to lead the country.

Wrong part of your post Mex.

I was more thinking along the lines of your comment about "most of us" wishing BJ well.😁
I have touched on the point before.😉

In theory, we ought to be getting leadership from the Cabinet and Dominic Raab, appointed as temporary chair of it. Our Prime Minister is "first among equals" and not a President, so the Cabinet should be able to keep things ticking over for a few weeks while he recovers.

However, (1) these are not ordinary times; (2) Raab is not a leader** unlike Boris who is (love him or hate him); and consequently, (3) there does seem to be a leadership vacuum with no overall vision (and cock-ups from Matt Hancock).

[** This is, of course, why he was appointed instead of someone like Gove who may make a bid for power himself.]

The absence of the PM has not quite become a serious problem yet, but Boris needs to eat his spinach and return within a week. He showed signs of getting back in the saddle today with his phone calls to President Trump and the Queen (but not necessarily in that order).

Oh behave yourself mex, try something new and have a positive post for once.

Oh go on then, without leadership? Five years at least.

Thanks very much, try the chicken.

He needs to get his lardy ass back to Downing Street pronto.
