How will Critchley’s performance be judged?

Changed circumstances for him obviously. He took us up as a rookie manager and kept us in the championship by a decent enough margin.

He now comes to manage us as someone who is billed as the very best candidate from a 50page dossier field. Surely he must be tasked with delivering promotion automatically given all the supposed advantages of knowing the players and the club and having all summer to recruit properly to h it the ground running.

I suspect such is the good Will of some supporters that they will tolerate a mid table season if we showed some signs of footballing ability but isn’t that where the club needs to move in from? Isn’t it right we expect more from this coaching maestro ?

how will you look to judge his performance if he lasts the season without quitting?

I’m a bit of a football geek and have still watched a lot of league one and two football the last few years - seen games at Bolton, Fleetwood, Accy and Morecambe last season and I have to tell you League One is a lot poorer than when we left it - probably typified by that Sheff Wed/Peterborough game.

Quality strikers, high lines, decent midfield and a resilient defence is all that is needed and I saw enough in those last 6 games with Dobbie to know we’re not a million miles away. Recruitment is absolutely key and in some ways Critch’s success can well be determined before a ball is even kicked.

All the relegated sides were up there this season, despite some doing worse then we did last season, even with all our self inflicted decisions and dreadful injuries.
