The fact is most people still view HS2's primary purpose as shortening journey times, when in reality that is just a by product of the technology. The real purpose is to increase capacity, taking trains off the WCML which allows local services to be improved. You can't improve local services currently because the problem is capacity - therefore the only way to improve them is to build more lines which is what HS2 is.
The WCML carries 40% of all the UK freight, and you're effectively going to take all that off it - HS2 has far more capacity because all the trains run at the same speed allowing more of them on the same line, whereas the WCML is a combination of a load of local lines linked together.

I get that it's extremely expensive, but if we don't carry out these big infrastructure projects, we'll get left behind economically. We already have been tbh. All the worlds leading economic powers are way ahead of us in high speed rail. When the channel tunnel was completed, the trains coming from France embarrassingly had to slow down significantly when they reached Britain because we didn't have the high speed rail track that France had, and therefore we hastily built HS1. And that was in the mid 90s, so even then we lagged behind. We take too long to reach these decisions, and there's too little understanding of what benefits they will enable.

If we can’t run a standard Hornsby Railway system or The Euro ‘Dark Star’ one (to places we talk to no more) then this posh one (for Tories with sound tax records!) what change does it have !
 
All a waste of time anyway when we will soon be living in 15 minute cities and won’t own anything and be happy 😃. I am sorry to say this government is not a true Conservative government as we have grown up to know it. And the alternative is even worse. It’s terribly frustrating how they waste taxpayers money.
 
If we scrapped the NHS the spongers would not be able to take advantage of it. I would rather pay health insurance than NI every month for a better service.

I worked with an ex NHS senior manager. He was retired but took a lower paid job in our company to get him out of the house. He told me he had taken early retirement. He said he received 2 years salary on top of his pension. He said it was £200,000. When I questioned him that wasn’t a great pension he stated NO that was just the 2 years salary! He told me what a joke it is.

But they are nowadays. All mostly remoaners and no respect to the leave voters. They would have us back in the EU in a heartbeat. 2.5 million legal immigrants in the past 10 years not to mention all the economical migrants that leave a perfectly safe Country to risk their lives to live here, and sponge off us.

We simply don’t have the housing or NHS resources to cope with this amount. It’s OK for them living in gated communities in multi million pound houses with security and private health insurance.

The original proposal for HS2 was from a Labour government. I am pretty sure if they had been in power in the intervening years, they would have ploughed ahead with it.

Yes very successful isn’t he just. Looking out for the interests of the average hardworking honest families who pay their taxes. Not wanting to flood the Country with cheap labour without criminal background checks whose values are out of alignment with the values and standards law abiding citizens live by. These economic migrants leave a safe country to risk their lives only to get collected half way by RNLI or border forces and get housed in 4 and 5 star hotels. Meanwhile war veterans and the down and outs with mental health problems sleep rough on our streets.
