Huddersfield reflection

I sometimes think pausing and reflecting upon a game for 12 -24 hours provides a more balanced and rounded view as you remember more than your initial emotional feelings.

Aside from the unnecessary delays getting into the ground, I thought the atmosphere from our fans from outstanding from the outset. This seemed to inject the team from the first whistle, helping us start with confidence and energy and a clear intent to win that game.

We scored an excellent goal for which I thought the finish from Jerry was outstanding . Whilst disappointed to concede so quickly and for me defensively was poor, we didn’t let that impact us both on and off the pitch. We continued to press and push for another and deservedly took the lead again and may have had 2-3 more before half time.

I thought second half we were comfortable for large parts and clearly the turning point was the red card. I missed the challenge as I was following the ball so can’t comment on whether it was a second yellow or not but I don’t blame Gabriel for us losing the game at all. Red cards happen and he will learn from maybe being too rash with his challenges but the poignant impact was the panicked changes to personal and formation. I totally get we need to react and consider how to adapt to 10 men but to take off Yates and Bowler - 2 of our best players yesterday (Keshi and Carey the other 2) I felt was impactful in letting them back in. Listening to Huddersfield fans on the way out they said how relieved they were to see Bowler and Yates go off and that for them gave them hope they’d win the game. Prior to that they thought they were well beaten.

The substitutions and formation change invited pressure with little outlet apart form Keshi running 80 yards on his own. I just feel we panicked too much and transformed a dangerous team into a wounded animal and Huddersfield capitalised.

In summary - yesterdays midfield and attack worked very well and are probably our strongest and most effective. I think defensively we are still very weak and prone to conceding 2-3 every game. A solid left back is needed and a partner for Marv. We’re not far away from being a very strong team in the championship, which after half a season is astonishing to consider. We’ve come so far so quickly.

We’ll stay up comfortably and next season I think we’ll be a top half threatening side . This club is going places fast and we have a squad of talent and massive potential. Let’s not single out players for mistakes as it happens. People in general develop and respond best when your support them when their down and need encouragement, so let’s back our boys and continue to watch them flourish!
