Iconic Designs.

Any locomotive can be made to run again, if you throw enough money at it and the main frame is sound. It’s a bit like Grandpa’s bike that has had every bit replaced apart from the frame. Steam locos can have the main boiler replaced several times, brakes, instruments, wheels etc.

I think the problem comes when parts are just no longer available on the shelf (just as happened to the last flying Avro Vulcan) or out of the scrapyard and it would be uneconomic to try and re-engineer them from scratch, such as major castings.

There were 35 A4 Pacifics like Mallard built and a handful survive, the rest have been cannibalised or scrapped. A steam loco has an expected operational life based on safety like any other machine. And a steam loco being a pressure vessel on wheels has to pass the Pressure Vessels Inspection regulations on a regular basis.

There was a lot of money made in the 60’s by scrap merchants when steam was phased out in favour of diesels, and quite a few steam locos running on heritage lines were saved out of those scrap yards. But the A4 Pacifics were just too big for most needs.
A crying shame tho..... I'm not a train spotter, but I help em out when they're busy 😂

I like the convertible cars and the mechanisms which deploy and retract the roofs.

I also like the ejector seat, and wish I had one one or more in my cab.

I like the design of various sports stadiums such as the iconic ones you see at major sports events eg Olympics.

I like those soft closing kitchen drawers and cupboard doors.

I don’t like over complicated bathroom taps where you need a degree in mechanics to try and figure out how to turn the tap on. No need.

I like some Dyson products and was looking forward to trying out their Covid mechanical ventilators. But they didn’t proceed beyond initial prototype stage. And in any case I wasn’t ill with covid.

I don’t go for all this pretentious talk. When people say I’ve got a ‘designer’ this and designer that.

Every product has to be designed. So saying its designer is stating the obvious.

That reminds me, next them I go to the toilet, I’m gonna wipe my butt with designer toilet paper.

Good call with the taps, especially when you've no idea which way is hot or cold, does my head right in.

Ralph Lauren do an amazing roll, which works out at just £15.99 a sheet, the deluxe roll with the scent of eau de toilet de Ralph comes in at just £1.97 extra per sheet. I always carry a roll in my man bag when venturing out with friends, in case i should need the Gents. Think Home Bargains stock it.

Some good ones already mentioned, here’s a few I’ve not seen mentioned:

Chrysler Building
Clifton suspension bridge
Ford Capri mk1 facelift
VW Beetle
Anything and everything designed by Gaudi, the Guell Palace probably being my favourite
Napoli kit c. 1990 with the Mars sponsor

Clifton Suspension Bridge is round the corner from Ashton Gate.

The classic Routemaster bus. They were still running in the 90s and I always got excited when, waiting for a bus, one would turn up and I could jump on and off.
