Indian Covid19 Variant

200,000 cases a day.
61% of new cases in some areas
A new variant with two mutations to the spike protein.
Affecting the young more severely,
Fears that it might evade the immune system and make vaccination less effective.

Boris Johnson's response.
"I'll do nothing as I'm off to India next week to beg for a trade deal to reduce the disaster that is Brexit and can't offend Modi as he has all the power in the negotiations."
A year on and he has learnt nothing about acting decisively to protect the health of the nation but puts in own political interests before the lives of British citizens.
Meanwhile numerous flights from India continue on a daily basis with only the requirement for self isolation for those arriving, and no testing of contacts. It is no wonder this variant is already in the country.
Another fine decision by our incompetent and corrupt government.

Bus every person on an Indian inbound flight into a Govt owned gulag style camp for 14 days.
Charge a fortune for the pleasure to all.

Result is a nice little earner for the Govt to cover the Brexit income fall and we control the virus.

I really should be a policy maker.

Pakistan: on the red list.
Bangladesh: on the red list.
India: not on the red list.

Q: which one of these 3 countries is Johnson begging for a trade deal with?

Another scarivant. Keep the fear level high.

Well that sounds good in theory, but could it work in practice. You can't stop people getting off planes.
You stop planes landing from the countries effected and anyone else who lands is bussed direct to government quarantine.

The Singapore model.

Singapore are not even allowing entry if you have been in the UK in the previous 14 days!!

Would this be the canceled trip to India you are raving on about?

Very authoritarian but tag people to make sure they quarantine, really if it's that important you have to travel that's the price you pay. We need to keep the UK out of further lockdowns firstly, then step up the help with worldwide vaccinations.

Any arrivals from South Africa go through customs and are taken to quarantine hotels and charged 1700 quid for the pleasure of 11 days banged up. That’s been going on for more than 2 months.

The average infection rate for the last 3 months in SA is 1200 per day.

So you're saying you CAN do this really easily and our government has decided NOT to do it? Well bugger me.

Anyone who does a home quarantine here (which is very very few) is tagged 👍

So many flights from India and Pakistan to the UK. The obvious thing to do when they added Pakistan to the red list was to add India. Was surprised that didn't happen till I heard yesterday Bozo was visiting next week.
The inconsistency is spellbinding.

The case numbers in India are not particularly high, in fact it would probably make more sense to add France and Poland to the red list than India.

Don't know about France but Poland on 1st April had 32,000 today it is half of that, so they are on a steep downward curve. India's cases, unfortunately are heading in the wrong direction.

"The inconsistency is spellbinding." Isn't that why there are so many cynics and doubters?

Per capita (7 day average) Poland & France are on about 450/1m compared to 150/1m for India, the positivity rate doesn't indicate this is a testing issue either.

Trends are clearly in different directions for India & Poland, less clearly so for France, which is presumably why India is going onto the red list from Friday, but this thread seems to be backward looking so current and past infection rates appear to be most relevant.

Just stop the flights. As in enforced cancellations.
Only special flights allowed in for U.K. residents returning - and all those people into enforced & policed quarantine, no exceptions. We are just too slack about it all. Too worried about how to get them from A to B and how many meals a day, etc. Not impressed.

Ministers have been accused of waiting too long to impose a travel ban on India as it emerged that thousands of people had arrived from the country since a worrying new variant first emerged there.

Yesterday Matt Hancock, the health secretary, said the government had taken the “difficult but vital decision” to put India on the travel red list after the number of confirmed cases of the variant in Britain rose to 103, with some catching it in this country.

It will mean that from 4am on Friday returning UK residents will have to quarantine in a government hotel for ten days while others will be refused admittance.

Boris Johnson cancelled a planned trip to India next week where he had hoped to set out plans for a post-Brexit free-trade deal while securing the release of millions of vaccine doses for Britain.

It is estimated that about 900 people a day arrive into the UK from India, with five flights from the country landing yesterday

Just been reading about India as a county and it’s fight against Covid.
Nearly 2,000 deaths daily, over 180,000 deaths in total, 256,000 new cases being reported daily, so many people are dying the authorities are having to organise mass funeral pyres often for up to 100 bodies at a time.
Let’s not forget it was only last month we were witnessing crowds of 60,000 being allowed in to watch the India v England test match series. 😮
Be careful what we wish for when sports events start opening up. 😳

Pretty sure I asked the question at the time. I think Wiz told me that had managed it very well so we’re allowed crowds in. It appears not.

That's because the news coming from the Indian government was that the virus was on the way out. We now know that Modi wasn't exactly telling the whole truth.

What got me was that Boris, last Tuesday I think, said in the Commons, 'We will not accept flights from India after 04.00 hrs on Friday'.
Why not say 'With immediate effect', or even within 24 hours?
Loads of flights from India must have brought many people carrying the 'variant' during those 3/4 days.

It was only 4 weeks ago when that tit Juila Hartley-Brewer and that weapon Toby Young were gushing about India and how it "proved" that Covid was on the wane blah blah. Dangerous attention seeking cretins

Hi Cat
How's your blood pressure today?

Exactly Dave
It's led to a rush back to the UK
if my memory serves my right the average number of incoming has been 900 and there is no way these passengers have all quarantined as they should
Thankfully Heathrow rejected as request for extra flights to be accommodated yesterday

I see a virgin Atlantic flight from Mumbai landed earlier this morning (on bbc news) but way after the 4am deadline.
It was given special dispensation. 😮🙄

Mumbai is a complete mess.
There are many factors affecting the spread of the virus in India, generally not helped by a government too busy playing politics.
Glad I cancelled my trip.

Air India have cancelled all flights to the UK for the next seven days, other carriers have reduced or cancelled the majority of scheduled flights to the UK.

India's now running at a million new cases every three days. No hospital beds, no oxygen and no ventilators. Just about as bad as it gets.
