Is Covid more contagious than first thought?

Ok so testing has improved in every country meaning we will find many more cases but that doesn't automatically mean the death rate goes up. The numbers across the world are frightening with over half a million new cases daily and the deaths above 7000 a day.

Over the first 7 months or so as the deaths started to drop we would see the epicentre move to another continent where it hadn't yet taken off. Now most places have passed their peak of their first wave the epicentre is returning to Europe and the countries who escaped huge deaths on the first wave are now seeing their worse numbers with some massive numbers coming through. Huge numbers coming out or about to come out of the countries who were hit hard first time around - France, Spain, UK, Italy, Belgium and Holland etc.

So by just partially relaxing some of the rules we see the virus almost spiral out of control and it seems there is no stopping it. I just wonder if it is actually a lot easier to catch it than first thought or is it just all the numpties who haven't taken it seriously and have helped with bringing back into the community?

my thoughts are it’s easier to catch. Still convinced when the kids went back that was start. As for numpties no, I personally know a couple of people who have been extremely careful and caught it. Not sure we’ve been told the whole truth with regards to surfaces etc.

Good reply, schools have definitely contributed and the number of whole year closures has been alarming. When I mentioned numpties I didn't mean people who have caught it, just the people who are sharing every conspiracy on Facebook, not wearing masks, breaking all the rules etc!

Interesting read, but seems there might be a certain amount of guesswork in that.

One big problem is that people spread it in the week before they have any symptoms and before they know they have it. Other viruses are only infectious at the stage people know they are ill.

The other issue is how long airborne Covid hangs around in the air when there is no ventilation (up to 3 hours). A spreader can have long since left a room and be infecting people in there still.

Why are so many people happy to believe the numbers being punted through the media without question?

After all, they haven't got anything got anything else right, how come people treat their stats as gospel?

The media are reporting government and ONS stats, they’re not making it up.

As the saying goes don’t shoot the messenger.

How many times have they interpreted the stats as a 'surge' ... is this now a 'super surge'?

The media may report the stats, but the stats don't tell the full story, like a balanced media is supposed to. Rather than drilling down into them, let's flood the headlines with 'Long Covid', 'Surge' and 'Spike' ...

I have no confidence in the stats (as presented) or the media.

If someone’s smoking a spliff you can smell it from what 20-30 meters away...if you put a mask on you can still smell it? Aren’t germs similar? I don’t know i’m just asking the question...?

My sister-in-law works at North Manchester Hospital and all staff received an e mail this morning stating that although they can only cater for 75 Covid patients the number had risen to 89.
The Nightingale hospital in Manchester has now opened so at least they can free up beds for other people.
They have a tired management review structure, Gold, Silver and Bronze.

Gold is now open and they will be having silver command meetings every day

When this all started I don’t believe anyone, in their wildest dreams, would have thought it would reach this severity.

When it all started I remember reading an article from some top professor who said if we get ONLY 20,000 deaths then we will,be very lucky.

How very true that forecast has turned out to be. Yet still very frightening when we don’t know what is to come.

As mentioned above there is only one way to slow the spread down and that is a complete lock down. But for how long and what happens after that is in the hands of the Gods.

Try and stay safe everyone.
