Yet more worrying news for the EU with a survey carried out by Tecne showing that 42% of Italians would like to see their country break ties with Brussels. Up from 26% in 2018. Looks like the growing discontent among Italians at the lack of help from the EU over its economic problems and the slap in the face from the EU during the worst of its pandemic crisis has given way to rising support for the idea of an independent Italy outside of the EU. Another poll conducted by Termometro Politico showed 40% of Italians want to leave the EU and the eurozone. Those in favour of remaining members of the EU accounted for 41.7%.
It looks like more in Italy want to leave than did in the UK in the polls leading up to the Brexit referendum. Still, there are more countries like Serbia, North Macedonia and Albania queueing to add to the EU's lame ducks in place of Italy and the UK.
