John Barnes broke (again)

Talk of all these players going to Saudi, what would John Barnes be worth now? I bet some of these ex-players must rue the day they were born in the wrong decade. I can see why bankruptcy might not wash if he's getting 200k from Liverpool a year:

You've got to pay your tax and do it at the right time
You can be slow or fast, but you may get a big fine
They'll always hit you and hurt you, in a court room attack
There's only one way to beat them, pay the money back
Catch me if you can, cause I'm a, er oh you did
And what you're looking at wasn't a master plan etc

Sorry no sympathy the money he was paid during the time he was at the top should have been way more than enough to set him and his next families generation or two up for life. It’s not what you earn it’s how you use it. Look at Micheal Owen my understanding is he used his money wisely thorough property and is still, very, very well off. Sorry how much does his media work bring in, more than what most of us earn I bet 😡🤬😡 but still not enough hey

Not that I disagree with the basic premise of what you're saying, but I would note that just through timing (i.e. when he played) Michael Owen would have earned a lot more than John Barnes even when accounting for inflation. Using money wisely is always easier when you have a lot of it.

Still know all the words to this .. 😁

You've got to hold and give
But do it at the right time.
You can be slow or fast
But you must get to the line.

They'll always hit you and hurt you,
Defend and attack.
There's only one way to beat them:
Get round the back.

Catch me if you can
'Cause I'm the England man
And what you're looking at
Is the master plan.

Same if you go back further isn't it. Imagine Jimmy seeing what some of our players were on decades later who weren't even fit to lace his boots.
I remember when I was in high school and Des Walker went to Italy. I'm sure he was on £30k a week. It was an unthinkable amount of money to me back then.

If you’re crap with money it doesn’t matter how much you have at any given time, eventually you will get yourself in a mess time after time after time. It’s even more difficult for people with a profile that they feel they need to keep up and live up to when the incomings don’t cover outgoings.

Made me chuckle that 👏👏

John Barnes was the highest-paid player in the football league towards the end of his career with £ 10,000 per week. That was 30 years ago,
and factor in tax, inflation, a divorce, and having seven children plus a younger wife and it soon takes a toll on your savings. Michael Owen was earning £ 110,000 per week at Newcastle, remains married to his childhood sweetheart, and only has two children.

There is a big difference in career earnings between the two players in a fifteen-year time frame, but the reality is that although John Barnes
was on great money at the time, it wasn't enough to sustain a millionaire lifestyle for 30 years. As many a lottery winner finds out
when they get a big house, expensive cars, luxury holidays, and a divorce they can soon spend a 4 or 5 million pound lottery win if they are
not sensible with the money, and that is probably what John Barnes earnt in his career.

I come from Jamaica
My name is John Barnes
When I don't pay my bills
the banks go bananas...
Admire your poetic efforts, but would the stanza not have scanned a little better had it read:

I'm from the Bahamas
My name is John Barnes
When I don't pay my bills
The banks go bananas ... (?)

I'd rather have 800 John Barnes being a bit idiosyncratic than 1 Michael Own being most boring man on earth, solvent or otherwise.

Are you not thinking of Robbie Fowler? Fowler owns so much property around Merseyside. I think a lot of it is student digs too. He was once the richest footballer under 30 because he invested his money
