So what do we think about this then? Recent non elected appointments made by Cummings and Gove and the appointment of Security Expert Tom Hurd (son of Douglas Hurd and old school chum - Eton and Oxford - of The Prime Malingerer) created to run out of the Cabinet Office to run a Biosecurity Agency which will take over low level alert system for Coronavirus - which as we all know by now is (COVID Alert level = R [rate of infection] + Number of infections).

The new agency could even take over from SAGE in advising Government Policy on how to approach the Coronavirus pandemic even though none of the new appointees have Scientific or Medical backgrounds and that access to the Agency by SAGE may be limited.

So it looks like the Security Services are going to be taking over the managing of the epidemic and taking over traditional Civil Service roles. Strange times eh!

Staff it with controllable civil servants, throw SAGE under the bus and control all information the public sees.

Surprised? nah

Cummings won't like the scientists as they're civil servants who deal in facts, not maleable puppets.

Cummings is probably the most enthusiastic champion of the use of science in Government that there is, actually. And he is currently putting hard cash into the sector over the medium term - lots of it.

The government is just replacing what the science sector is / was getting from the EU budget, it is not new money as you are trying to spin it. We used to get double money from the EU science budget that we put into it because we are good at science. Despite this cash, our science sector will still suffer as a result of leaving the EU because we will not be able to take part in the thousands of collaborative projects that EU membership gives us access to.

The other thing that is very revealing about your answer is that you seem to accept that the unelected Dominic Cummings is actually running the country.

If you love him so much why don't you marry him?

I'm just saying that in this instance a lot of the criticism of him is plain wrong, apart from unfair. No need to get all six year old about it.

What a stupid Reply
Yet you've still not replied to my question regarding your comments on the press and why you feel they're putrid, you could only bang out something about me being a Piers Morgan fan.

Why do you think the press are putrid?

I'm sure he has a lot of power point presentations lined up to validate your point.

I know little about him, which is odd as apparently he's making policy decisions, but I know his type, he's got middle management written all over his parka.

Wasn't the whole point of Brexit that we were no longer controlled by unelected bureaucrats? Who made Cummings the boss of us all?

Oh grow up ffs, I don’t have to give you a reason why I think the press are putrid, if you don’t know the answer to this then your a bigger clown than I thought. Your posts are coming across like a 14 year olds, are you going to ask me a fight again 🤡

The money that you trumpeted earlier on in the thread is to mitigate against the damage caused to British science by err himself and his merry band of Brexiteers. So I think that the criticism of Cummings is still valid and as pointed out above you are talking about an 'advisor' as if he was a minister.

Very good. 😀 And completely irrelevant.

Listen, I am no fan, but he is the biggest advocate that the scientists have at the top of Government.

ESBN

with all due respect, unless you are a mind reader, I very much doubt you know which funding I was talking about. It hasn't been announced yet and it isn't programme funding anyway.

OK then spill the beans if you are ITK. Are you back in the saddle as one of Dom's wierdos?
Seriously I'd be interested to find out what is coming, I know that before COVID there was a very bold policy aspiration to drastically increase science spending to 2.4% of GDP. But in this environment I thought that everything would change since we are about to borrow an extra £300 billion that we didn't expect.

I'm not prepared to say anymore than I have. I was merely pointing out that the caricature of him (and other people) that you read on social media is not necessarily the whole or even the right story, always. He is VERY pro-science, and uses his influence accordingly, where he can.

As for being "back in the saddle" as one of his "weirdos" - where do you get that from? I'm one of the staunchest Remainers on here and always have been, and have the political antipathy towards him that you would expect as a result. I just believe in being fair to people on the basis of what I know, as opposed to believing everything I read.

I was pulling your plonker with my wierdos thing - no offence intended and I hope none taken.

I know that Cummings is pro science but it does seem that he favours scientists who confirm his predispositions. One or two of the wierdos that he has hired have had some rather dubious views and I think one of them had to resign because of involvement in Eugenics / racial link to IQ type of stuff. That is lunatic fringe stuff. In a lot of areas of science you can find a scientist who will confirm your views (Economics is the most obvious) and my impression is that Cummings uses scientists to push his somewhat alarming agenda (for instance the now aborted herd immunity thing). The scientists that flank ministers on a daily basis are a sort of shield to stop the government getting blamed for decisions that the government have made. And I noticed that Prof Fergusson was thrown under a bus recently.
Like you, I am not a fan of his regardless of whatever you know and I am sure he will come unstuck sooner or later.
