Josh Miles Signing Development squad

He's an attacker, Good 👍 Let's hope Dobbie can work his magic and get the lad ready for the next stage.

Presumably had trials with us. Who decides? Dobbie? Donnelly? Critch? All of them? Donnelly said....

"Josh has plenty of personality on the pitch and is an exciting player to watch, something which made him an instant fan's favourite with Southport and we hope to give him the platform to show similar here."

Who was the promising young defender we signed from Southport a couple or so years ago?

…and what happened to them?

Been on trial for a while. Played vs Squires and looked good

Blackpool Football Club is delighted to announce the arrival of Josh Miles from National League North side Southport for an undisclosed fee.

The Seasiders have beaten off competition to secure the services of the young prospect who will link up with the Club’s Development Squad for the upcoming campaign. Miles has signed a three-year deal as he joins Stephen Dobbie’s squad.

Impressing as part of the Steven Gerrard Academy and a member of their squad that took part in the 2023 Dallas Cup in the USA in April, the youngster has already featured in Tangerine in pre-season. Miles built first-team experience with Southport prior to his move to Bloomfield Road.

Josh Miles said:

“I’m delighted to be joining the Club. This is a big step in my career and I can’t wait to be part of the new season. I feel this is a place that will get the best out of me.”

Academy Director Ciaran Donnelly said:

"Josh has senior experience at a young age, showcased by his first team appearances with Southport. We jumped at the opportunity to bring him to the Club as he joins up with the Development Squad for the upcoming season.

Impressive write up in Liverpool Echo:

Brighton and Hove were interested in him... this sounds like a major coup.

Also think it speaks to the positive direction the club are going in that we're now dishing out fees for players who aren't even immediately going to contribute to the first team.

The academy/development side improvements have been massive under Sadler and will certainly bear fruit soon, especially when the new training ground is built.

We've gone from signing players for free on three month contracts for the first team, to paying fees for players on three year contracts who are only for the development squad. You can never tell whether these players will make it, but if just one or two turn out to be gems, it will reap massive dividends. They're calculated gambles, but ones worth making imo. If Brighton were interested, it's significant because they rarely get it wrong these days.

With that barnet he'll be known as Hair Miles ! Good luck lad.
How does having your hair styled in a particular way serve to reveal your historical ancestry? With your 'Hair' Miles reference, you've clearly been able to trace some Germanic connections from his past, and, I'm now left wondering to myself, does Miles himself know of his Teutonic - as opposed to follicle - roots? I think we should seek greater clarification on the matter.

Looks like a rare talent. Great to see the club bringing in prospects like this. Another thing, Brighton is the best club in England for discovering young talent. If they're interested then he must be special.

'... which made him an instant fan's favourite ...'

Sorry to be a total bore but this is an instance of a plural possessive, therefore it should be written as '... fans' favourite ...', as opposed to, '... fan's favourite ...' which is, of course, an example of a singular possessive! A very subtle difference but it's important that people get it right.

I don't think you really are sorry.

I don't think this is the right forum for teaching distinctions between singular and plural possessive apostrophes, but good effort. 😅

We are doing something right here, beating off other clubs academies, like with the recently signed Conor McVeigh.

The selling of the club, especially at that development level, must really be onto something.

Is it Critchley, Dobbie, the club and the vision and pathway to the 1st team all combined?

This lad sounds the business and whatever it is we're doing to beat off other teams, it's working. We seem to be seen now as a great place to develop, it's fantastic.

An exciting future ahead and if some of these players in a year or 2 (or less) are ready for the 1st team, we could have some exciting players.

It's going to be exciting anyway I think this season, but to have this progressing in the background adds another layer to it. We will be starting to see some breakthrough now from the development squad and we can benefit. If we produce just one amazing talent or a few decent ones, benefit from their talent on the pitch and then sell on for big money, we can really progress and reinvest again, working our way up the ladder that way hopefully.

It's starting to get really interesting this development squad.

Perhaps they employ an instant fan - turns up at player signings and the like decked out in club colours a la Ken Bailey (one for the teenagers) - who took a particular liking to young Milesy.

Southport fans forum has some very positive comments about this lad. One compares him to Phil Foden, another thinks he might be the first player they've had play for them who might go on and reach the pinnacle of the game. Quite unusual comments really for such a young player.

But how do you know he ain’t just one fan’s favourite

It's Romani ite domum! Go home is an order!!!

Or, Dr H, maybe we're all getting this 'instant fan' business totally wrong, and, it is, in fact, nothing more than a quick-response temperature control measure for use in foreign climes ...

Just read up on this Lad in Liverpool Echo...seems like they think he is going to be a hell of a talent.....

I'm the last person in the world to put a young player down.
I think it was Miles that came on as a 2nd half sub at Marine and he looked OK.
To bring things down to earth, he will be 22 this November (he would count as a 1st team squad member), he hasn't made it yet so I'm guessing he's not the next Phil Foden.
However there are plenty of late developers in the game so I sincerely hope Josh will be one of them.

He’s aged quickly. Southport had him as 17 this morning!

He's 17 according to the reports?

What the fuck?

Yes I saw the Liverpool Echo report but looking elsewhere seemed to suggest he was older than that.

I must admit IF he was the 2nd half sub at Marine he looked more like 17 than 21.

This article mentions that he is 17 now and was only 16 when he joined Southport in December last year.

I suspect Southport have a better handle on his age than a random stats site.
