Junior Doctor's Strike - stay safe

Yep no big ladders, no alcohol until the weekend, stay off the roads where possible. I was going to get my bike out for the first time this year. Will wait a bit longer.

I realize pay is important but if I was a doctor 🧑‍⚕️ I couldn’t strike thinking that someone could be really ill or even die because i decided to without my labour

I couldn’t be a government minister / party supporter knowing that the dispute could have been settled weeks ago, and never even have got to strike, if the party had just met with the reps and made a deal.

The idea is to agree to below inflation pay rises a year after the inflation has already been 'baked in'. That way, the government can appear relatively generous with the % they offer but the money supply problem is quietly being chipped away at.

‘We’d like fair wages’
‘Here’s unfair wages, if you don’t like it, move abroad’
‘Ok’
‘Wait, have you considered the offer of unfair wages?’

Maxnix is currently in A and E with his friend who has just fractured his humerus bone whilst having an arm wrestle (rare injury apparently.) He requires surgery and is going to be off work for at least 3 months.

I’d suggest perhaps give arm wrestling a miss 😔

But you’re quite happy going to sleep knowing that pay isn’t sufficient to recruit sufficient doctors. And therefore people will be really ill or even die.

I totally agree with you there.

I don't necessarily agree with all the doctors demands but I don't like that they are being offered what they have been offered by the current Government, a Government that has so many members who have made themselves financially secure - or increased their wealth !!!!!!!! - from Covid procurement.

I know two wrongs don't make a right, etc, etc but if I were a doctor, I wouldn't like to receive what I considered to be a poor offer and to be publicly criticised by those with their snouts stuck firmly in the trough.

The UK has had prolonged wage stagnation for the past 20 years so doctors aren't any different to the rest of the working population in that respect so not sure why they keep mentioning this 35% rise to cover that period as every other industry could say the same.

These junior doctors' heads would explode if they worked at the Land Registry.
They've had 2% increase on their wage over the last 5 years!!

Public services have had their pay eroded over many years & the cost of living crisis has just tipped them over the edge. All these disputes could have been settled & not for the 35% used as a lever by the junior doctors, there are ways to make a settlement. I can't speak for other companies but our last pay award was 5% & a one off £1200 cost of living payment.

Public being told to take extra care this week due to a lack of health care.

What won't you be doing this week in order to keep safe?

I was thinking of going up a ladder to put a bird box on a tree trunk. Might leave it to next week now instead.
I find a stack of chairs on a table beats a ladder any day, especially if the bottom chair is a work chair on a very stable 5 wheel base.

The 35% is a negotiation tactic against the 4% apparently described as reasonable by this Government. Of course, when you haven't declared £100 million sat in your back pocket, you'd settle for 4%.

Unfortunately, one of my close relatives was meant a minor procedure last week; cancelled. He went into A&E and then subsequently died. TBH the responsibility for this mess rests with the Government who have devalued the role of Doctors for too long. They are the front line, along with nurses.
