..... momentum is everything... how is Nathan lyon going 2 feel?... pat Cummins the captain?.... Smith and lausagam only 35 runs between them in 2 innings yet they still won ... what harm has that done 2 us ... ?... I fear it could messy ...

Fit Mooen Ali and we win that. Nothing to fear from this Australian team. More than matched them in a brilliant test match. I don’t think we’re as mentally weak as we used to be and I’d be even more determined if I was part of that England dressing room

Who is lausagam? Never heard of him.

.... all good points gentlemen... the aussies know they've been in a scrap and only just won ... the real winner was test cricket today ... and there such an arrogant bunch a touch of hubris might kick in ... fortunate favors the brave ..

I think England need to bite the bullet and bring back Foakes. Bairstow didn’t look very agile and it might also have affected his batting. Tough on whoever misses out though.
There is a good chance if they don’t do this we will be talking about the same problem after the second test.
Might need to find a bowler or two from somewhere with Ali, Stokes and maybe Anderson looking like they may not be properly fit for the next one.

The only worry was declaring about 25/30 runs too early and Bairstow not convincing behind the stumps.
No. Not a worry. Engcestershire could have won it with a bit of luck. Carey gets out and it's in the bag until Ausbal kicks in.

Stokes made the right decision. And as a result the game of Cricket won. Perfect.

You've just won the "Cup half empty" award for 2023 pal.

As mentioned, very fine margins indeed, if Stokes holds on the catch we win the Test, it's that fine a margin.

Negative points? I'm all for Bazball but declaring when we had them on their knees in the first innings was just plain dumb as fuck when you have a set batter in like we had with Root who was whacking it all over, sure if you have 9,10, Jack at the crease you may consider it, but after all we only got to bowl 4 overs at them so it's wasn't a gamble worth taking, a set Root could have added 50 for those last 2 wickets, imagine us having an extra 50 on our total today?

Next Test? Well it certainly looked like the magnificent Jimmy was playing like a 40 year old, so much so we didn't use him when the chips we down this afternoon, imagine a fired up Mark Wood with the new ball sending down 90 mph plus deliveries at the tailenders today? Wood for Jimmy for me at Lords.

Overall Bairstow is a class act but can we afford not to play Ben Foakes, arguably the best keeper in the world and no slouch at batting,Bairstow's three key misses in the first innings cost as a lot of runs, somehow we need to get Foakes in the team and play JB as a specialist batsman, we are weak at the top of the order so all three slots are up for discussion, we are strong in the middle order so swapping JB for Foakes and playing JB further up strengthens us both batting and keeping wise.

My call would be to bring in Foakes and Wood leaving out Anderson and Pope, bring on the Lords Test.

why do you....post messages like this...sort of like....you have been drinking formaldehyde...from under....the kitchen.... sink?

Another boring miserable git post on Avftt number 1001.
No surprise my gang take the piss out of this site and rarely post.

We threw away too many wickets when the Aussies had no idea. 3 stumpings, the worst Root at a time when we could have set them 350. There has to be a balance at top test level.

Warner summed it up this morning, spoke very highly of our positive approach, but that we gave away wickets and they’ll be focussing on that. They play percentage, which is boring, but they won the match.

Sure we’ll find the right batting balance, but the biggest challenge will be making our bowling more threatening and less reliant on Broad. For the first time Jimmy looked to be struggling and not enjoying himself. Hopefully he’ll bounce back on a more helpful track.

Agree with the OP. Think the Aussies will be extremely difficult to beat now. They are just so consistent with the bat and the ball. Very difficult to beat. England aren't consistent and our ageing bowling department is well behind theirs. Whilst our batting is good to watch the tactics were all wrong in that test. There would have been nothing wrong in batting on in the 1st innings and taking a draw in the test match. But they went shit or bust and it bit them on the arse. It was very naïve IMO.

As usual the hyenas all jump on the OP for expressing an opinion. Just because you want England to win doesn't mean any opinion that we won't is either negative or bollocks. The "fact" is that we could win the series but we probably won't.

' I don't think the word 'draw' is in Stokes vocabularly . We had the game when the 8th wicket fell but couldn't quite get over the line. 8 times out ot 10
we would have won the match from that position. Great game lost by a whisker....draw , no thanks.

You can analyse all the things that could have been better, but for me having to bowl Root for so long due to Ali's injury coupled with Stokes injury & Andersons returning from injury is what played a massive part in us not being able to despatch the final few Aussie batsmen. That proved to be the difference & out of our hands. Great test match & I'm looking forward to the next one.

There are always “ifs” and “buts” which can be discussed for ever but the O/P is ridiculous. The first game in a 5 match series which could have gone either way and for me any match that goes down to the wire is far better entertainment than a match that is either won after 3 or 4 days or a match whereby a team bat for ever with no intention of declaring.
Ben Stokes is one of (if not the best) captains we have had for a very long time and his positive attitude is brining the red ball game back into popularity.
His declaration on day one was an excellent decision as it allowed his bowlers a few overs before the end of play.
All the dinosaurs who were commentating were in disbelief at the decision which shows how stuck in their ways they still are. Times change and people want to get some excitement when watching sport
And obviously Ben is his own man and has the balls to make such decisions.
As for the O/P comment about the Ashes being lost then at least you won’t need to watch it but I am certainly looking forward to the next four games with a big possibility that the Ashes will be decided in the last session on the last day of the final match.

Losing the first game means one thing . . . . we can now pick up the urn in Lancashire rather than Yorkshire :)

2 main things to address
Wicket Keeper
Spin Bowler

2 peripherals to tweak
Openers
Pace attack
Spot on, Foakes in (As he should have been originally), Wood in for Jimmy.

Spinner wise if Moeen is not fit do we throw in the young lad Rehan Ahmed? The lad can also bat a bit.

Pace attack wwas not quick enough, get Woody in.

Do you really need a spinner at Lords? Root might be enough?
I guess they'll assess the conditions and make that call.

Certainly having Nathan Lyons is giving them an edge on us right now in that department, if we don't feel the need for a spinner (besides Root) we could add Mark Wood to our attack which I'd do in any case and he gives us that raw pace the other don't give us.

His addition would have been crucial for us in that last hour when the new ball became available at Edgbaston.

Don't keep up to date with cricket overall like I used to & suddenly remembered Archer, once hailed as the next best thing pace wise. Just been reading up & he was expected to be available for this series but seems to get one elbow injury after another. Him & Wood would have given the aussie batsmen the hurry up we lacked in that first test.

Wood should come in, so one of three goes. Broad isn't going anywhere, Robbie is the immediate future, so Anderson gets left out. Will they be brave enough to do that at Lords? I doubt it.

Same team plays as long as Moeen is fit.

Yes, there might be a repeat of the 2005 series.

Or there could be a repeat of the 1989 horror show.

The 2019 series outcome is also possible.

So, as I see it, there are 3 possible outcomes: we could win, lose or draw the series.

Hopefully, Test Match Cricket will be the overall winner!

Yay!

Some shrewd observations there!!

So your forecast is we will either win lose or draw the series?

Could you narrow it down a bit?🤔
