Kenny Dougall

Been one of my favourite players over the years but I was so disappointed in him last night. His delivery was appalling and he made mistake after mistake. When you look at that Wharton lad on his debut, he made Dougall look like the debutant - their midfield ran the game and ours didn't even come a close second.

I thought Dougall was decent last night at corners, according to the BBC stats we had 7 corners, and we had two clear chances from them
the Williams chance where he failed to hit the target, and the one where Madine got an elbow just before he was about to head the ball. We had a variety to the corners and I thought two clear-cut chances were a good return. But the problem is that he is being asked to do far too much, not only to try to stop the other team from playing but also to be the playmaker, the set piece taker, and to try and score goals, he was unlucky with the chance in the last minute. If you watch the amount of running he has to do, he must be absolutely knackered at the end of a match.

Blackburn's system was 4-2-3-1 and it allowed them to push a man up on Dougall and give him no room to turn and pass out from the back, it also
allows their two holding midfield players to have room as they have a player extra in the middle of the park it allowed them to pass around Blackpool. Most of Blackburn's chances were when Gabriel was isolated against one player, often Blackburn's best player. The problem with the Blackpool 4-4-2 system is that Bowler doesn't get back and support and Madine isn't fast enough in the press. Also, Connoly is a defender and not a midfielder, he is okay doing the defensive part of the game but he lacks the ability of Stewart or even Wintle from last season.

Clearly, Appleton is being forced into playing the current system with injuries and suspensions, but we needed to get another experienced player in as we cannot rely on Stewart and young players on loan.

Individual performances have to be judged in context. We didn't have a system that functioned last night. It led to Grimmy being our man of the match. Individuals struggling. Josh included.

Good post.
Dougall is the one player more than any other that we've had to rely on for defensive duties and he always works hard for the team even when he's not at his best.
I agree though we need more creativity in that area which will hopefully be provided by some of the loan players or a new addition today.

Their midfield ran the game as every other opposition teams will run midfield as, at the moment, we haven't got one.

I'm sick and tired of post after post saying how good Kevin Stewart is.
It doesn't matter if you're a mixture of Zidane, Scholes and Gerrard, if you're not playing you're no use.

I’ve posted the same for the last 3 games and got pelters for it, some on here even suggested he was MOM against Bristol City when he had an absolute stinker.
Hopefully when the two young lads return from injury Kenny will be used more sparingly.
Don’t get me wrong he’s done great while he’s been here and won games for us but he’s become the weak link these days and he’s not on his own either.

Great post. You have to look at quality of our possession, every time Kenny had the ball at his feet, he was surrounded by blue and white with no one to pass to. I said last night, Kenny and to an extent Connolly, were too busy fire fighting to run anything going forward. I actually thought KD didn't have a great game by what I consider to be his very high standards, missed a few tackles and did misplace passes, but I think there is some context to that which come from the team as a whole, and in a midfield 3 with some creativity around him he's an important player for us IMO. His set pieces I agree I thought were very good on the whole (which again isnt always the case). It baffles me to see him being written off on here.

I think it must be a case of systemic conditioning if you think our corners are good. They are awful, matched only by our throw ins, which literally nobody ever wants to receive.

Kenny shouldn't be taking set pieces but as others have said we are short

I don't get the criticism over his errors as almost all have been caused by Grimmy playing it short to him when he had his back to goal and subject to high press meaning he had zero options and finds himself under immediate pressure

That's my only real criticism Grimshaws distribution.

I’d hate to see what you think is a bad set piece.

Dougall is not good enough… end of

He had 2 or 3 players hounding him when the ball was played out to him from Grimshaw - he’s had a lot of pressure put on him playing as a two, he’s expected to defend and break up play and also get forward, which left massive gaps last night at times. Not his fault, he hasn’t had the players next to him.

I dont like when Dougall has too much time on the ball,he can sometimes dwell on it and loses possession. He is a better player when he just pops his passes off one touch if possible and just keep a passage of play moving for us. So with that in mind perhaps he isnt the best person to give it to short from goal kick.

Nothing to do with Dougall. He played ok considering he's the only good midfield player we have. He's a defensive midfielder trying to be everything that he isn't due to lack of players.

Furthermore, nobody has recognised that the young Blackburn lads in midfield were bloody brilliant either.
