Kevin Phillips as our next manager

I think most of us have struggled to come up with any great realistic options for next season but I think Kevin Phillips could be a good shout. He was a vastly experienced player, England international and for those who like an ex-player, a class act for us.

He has been coaching for a while and moved into management last year at South Shields. He has done fantastic so far with a win percentage above 50%. He would attract players to the club and, unlike some of those that have been suggested such as Nathan Jones, would actually come to a L1 club.

I imagine he would ACTUALLY get a tune out of our strikers too.

Thoughts?

He has the biggest playing budget in a league where most are utterly skint. He hasn’t achieved anything
Still, doesn't always guarantee success does it? People always seem to still hail Guardiola despite him having spent over 1 billion euros since he's been at City!

At least Phillips has some management experience and he also has been coaching for a while. Think he would be enthusiastic about stepping up and his playing career was amazing. Up and coming manager?

Chances are he would set up to give our forwards a realistic chance of scoring. Unfortunately, if we go down it is highly unlikely he would get the chance to work with Jerry. With a reduction of £7M in income it is hard to justify his wages.

He'll work with him unless someone comes in and offers good money for him. All players wages will be reduced if we were to go down. That's pretty normal.

Even if Jerry were to leave, we would still need a group of strikers that can score goals! If we're in L1 we have to be aiming for promotion.

You seem to know all the answers, who are the likely candidates then?

There must be several dull as fuck managers out there for him to choose, does Sadler ask to see a photo of their anorak collection as part of the recruitment process?

Will be interesting to see how many players leave if we get relegated

I've seen a few names banded around on here as the next big thing and maybe some of those would fit the bill, but how likely are they to come right now?
It's the knuckle end of the season for everyone, looking at three names that have been suggested, I can't see any of them wanting it until the season has finished.

Wellens - Leyton Orient, currently top of League 2, would surely want to see out promotion with his current club into the league we are most likely to be in next season.

Simpson - Carlisle United, currently 4th in League 2, could still be promoted automatically or a good bet to be in the play offs, again would surely want to see out the season with his current club.

Evatt - Bolton Wanderers, currently 5th in League 1, likely to be in the play offs for promotion to The Championship, unlikely to come in any case but would surely see out the season at Bolton.

In short, to get someone decent, we are probably going to have to wait until the season ends. So we will probably have to get used to Mick ball and accept our fate.

It’s a huge step up

As one p[art of my family are from South Shields I follow their progress.
What a great job KP has done this season.
Might be a good choice of manager.

Thoughts?

If he was here now he'd actually get a game pal.

Oh and we're not a L1 club either......................yet.
KP would be far better than our current strikers (who in fairness aren't being played as strikers).
RB - he's almost correct though, as we do play like & are managed like a 1st division team. The fat lady is warming up & the winner takes it all on Friday.

This is a suggestion for next season, not to replace MM. I agree that no manager would want to come in now. We know Badlan is already looking at who might come in at the end of this season and we will all want a prompt appointment.

It is. But he has played at a very high level and coached at a high level. Been a lot of talk of Charlie Adam and other academy coaches so I'm just throwing Kevin Phillips into the mix. I think it would be a good appointment that most would get behind.
I agree with you in principle and yes people would definitely get behind him. I would prefer KP to Adam

If you are looking at comparatives to Phillips then another ex-(far less talented) player got the better of Kev yesterday. Step forward Bamber Bridge's manager Jamie Milligan (ably assissted by John Hills). As a coach Jamie's a lot more experience than Kev and he also gets the best out of a team of Blackpool rejects (Sinclair-Smith, Rowan Roache, McCauley-Wilson, Sky Sinclair, Isaac Sinclair) and current loaness (Mariette and Lescott).
I'm not for one minute suggesting Jamie would or should get the nod ahead of Kevin it's just a comment. Another ex-player desperate to manage us is of course Andy Preece who was nearly in tears ystdy after a bad decision went against Chorley.

Why the obsession with ex players as managers? It's about as imaginative as Sadler and Mansford have been.
I wouldn't pick a random ex player for the sake of it but he has been a coach at Leicester and Derby and is now doing very well as a manager? Ex England international and a very good playing career. You want to rule him out because he had a spell with us?

I'm not really bothered that Kevin Phillips has played for us, but for some it's a bonus. I'm more looking at his playing career, plus his experience of coaching the first teams at Leicester and Derby. He is now also doing very well in management. A big name who would attract players to join the club. Ticks most of the boxes for me.

Like I said it was just a comment and a bit of information. Kevin Phillips is "the right type" and certainly someone BFC should be doing some background checks on and maybe even inviting him for a chat.

No, I get that 100% I wasn't for one minute putting down your suggestion.
My comments were aimed at the "pot McCarthy now" posters who seem to think we could attract someone else to come in before the end of the season and I just don't see that happening.
I hope we are looking very hard at the alternatives for next season, we need to appoint within the first week or so of the season finishing at let the new man get on with it, no fannying around for weeks with no outcome.
Could we even be approaching people now? Simpson for example, "Look Paul, if you don't get Carlisle promoted, how do you fancy the Blackpool job?"
Or maybe there's someone without a job at the moment we could be approaching?
It's probably going to be the most important appointment since Holloway.

Yes, a very important appointment. If we do end up going down (which looks ever the more likely) we don't want to be down there for long and should be aiming to bounce straight back up.

I listened to a recent South Shields radio commentary and commentators were saying although getting promoted fans haven't always been too impressed with Kevin Philips management they are a professional side in that division and most likely the biggest budget by far.

Face value he sounds decent. Knows Thommo so hopefully that would smooth the way for Thommo and the No 2.

Tbh a lot of untried managers probably would be OK as long as they had the right backup working with them and the right attitude. There can onlt be MM who doesn't believe scoring more goals than the other team wins games.

I know this would be a bit of a contentious one but Nathan Jones would get my vote but if we go down I don't think there's a chance in hell of that happening. If we go down then Paul Simpson or Richie Wellens of ex players, Kevin Phillips is an interesting one, I hadn't;t even considered him but I used to work with his sister and he's mr football through and through so could be a good shout.

Maybe they should look abroad too although I don't know anything about who is available there.

We need to get back to the original vision they had, for me it was the right mindset but for some reason they just panicked when Quitch left and completely abandoned it. Get someone in with a bit of experience but who are young and hungry, play football the right way who can be secure in the knowledge that they can build a team under a long term plan. No more Grayson's, MA's or Dinosaurs!!

Lee Carsley from England U21s?
Gareth Taylor is Man City womens manager and might be interesting

Or bollux to it. Offer it Emma Hayes. Someone will do it sooner or later and it can’t be any worse than the last couple or even some of the candidates we’ve had. If AFC Richmond can get Ted Lasso then why not a WSL manager in men’s football?

Not sure about Kevin Phillips?
Lee Carley is apparently thinking of leaving England after the Euro's, but we would only be able to appoint him in July which wouldn't be ideal.

I wouldn’t have a problem with Nathan Jones at all

What about Steve Thompson/ Brett
Ormerod as a 1/2 ? There will be a mass migration at the end of the season, and not that much money for incoming replacements. Money talks, and Pool may have to look increasingly at their Academy. I rather thin that people who know/ love the Club might be a pre-requisite.

I would rather have Kevin Phillips and Thommo or whoever Phillips actually wanted as his number 2. He will know Thommo though so you never know.

I don't think it is at all necessary that the next coach has prior links to the club though. Critch didn't and he got us promotion and kept us up. Most clubs don't exclusively hire from their former players.

I’d take him .. knows the club and fans and was well liked - but build a team around him who also know the club?

The mighty Stalyvegas drew 3-3 with Kevin Phillips side. On that evidence alone he is miles away from being a the right candidate.🤣

Kevin Phillips inherited a top two side that has the biggest wage budget by a mile. Most managers in that league would probably have done what he has done this season. If he wins the league next season then league clubs may show an interest.

If you really want to consider tier 7 managers just because they played a season or two for BFC you are asking for trouble.

Incidentally, Jamie Milligan has got Bamber Bridge to second place in the same league on a relative shoestring budget, and has just beaten South Shields this weekend.

Just saying...

Thommo ???? Don’t be ridiculous

Would Simpson have to undergo a Tattoo audit?
