I turned 30 Saturday and the money i got i booked a trip to Poland to visit Auschitzh & Shindlers factory, they’ve always been high on my bucket list

Has anyone ever been to Krakow? If so could you tell me is it cheap? And would €500 do me for 3 days

It’s a fantastic city and not expensive at all. €500 spends is more than enough unless there’s 10 of you going! You will really enjoy it plenty to do, plenty to see and plenty to drink 🍺

I've been, had a brilliant time. Beer and food were cheap (two years ago) I did aushwitz and the salt mine. Had a driver take me both places, went to a footy match (cracovia) there is also Wisla. 500 euros is plenty spending money

It’s fabulous place. We go to Zakopane every year which is like an hour and a half away. Ideal for skiing in the winter and gorgeous views in any season
I fancy going there. I loved Poland and the people, great place. And to the original OP my son and I went. He was 20 at the time and can supp. A top meal with steak and beer would cost 40 quid for us both. The dumplings and pork knuckle were superb and that's even cheaper

Zakopane is magical and probably the cheapest skiing trip ever. If you don’t ski there is plenty to do

I'm a musician and played over there a few years ago. We played in a place called Wroclaw formally Breslau. It was 40p for a vodka and fresh orange. 5 of us went for an Italian with wine and the bill came to £28.
Get into the Bison grass Vodka it's superb.

As others have said, cheap as chips, you should have loads with £500. Be prepared for Auschwitz, very interesting and heart rendering. It certainly brought tears to my eyes. Some wonderful bars and vodka bars. The food is excellent and language is no problem. I would certainly visit again one day. Can't vouch for the transport, we walked everywhere. Tour to the salt mines and the camps. Enjoy it. I would imagine the plane is Polish time.

Wroclaw is a wonderful city. Have been here many times working for a week at a time as my company has a huge office there. Only downside is it's not that well connected with flights, but BA are supposedly opening up a route there from Heathrow.

We flew to Krakov and drove from.the airport. We walked around the city it was really interesting. The statues on the pavements were really good. I liked the place and the people were lovely.

prices have crept up over the last few years, at least the cities that I visit most which are Warsaw and Wroclaw. But you can still get a pint of good beer for less than 2 quid and a main course for a fiver. And hotels very cheap. Also worth visiting in Krakow is Plaszow on the hill, close to Schindler factory, where the camp was. Huge memorial there and Amon Goeth's villa. And in the evening Kazmierz is a great place for bars.

Thanks Guys 1st time travelling alone to a country with a different language bit nervous if i am been honest in that regard
don't worry about travelling alone. I do a trip every year on my own, driving round Europe doing WW2 stuff. It's highly liberating and peaceful, doing exactly what you want, when you want, where you want, etc. I do find evenings can be slightly lonely, when say having a meal on your own, but that lasts about 30 mins. Take a book to read, you'll have your phone to read stuff on. Nothing can go wrong. You are in a major city in a first world country :)

If you shopped around €50 would do. Great place.

Went into one of the chocolate shops just off the square, as we simply couldn’t resist.
The Mrs and me went upstairs to the cafe , where we ordered a hot chocolate to drink ( thinking it was a standard UK type of hot chocolate).
The waitress firstly brought over two glasses of water, which had us puzzled.

it wasn’t until the huge cups of hot chocolate arrived at the table ( with spoons ) and we took a sip did it become clear that it was a large cup of warm melted chocolate.
Talk about coating your throat.

it was so nice we returned several times over our weekend away., but second time onwards we ordered the hot chocolate with fruit….far nicer.

ps…as someone said earlier, the salt mines are well worth the visit.

enjoy !

Really good city and eating out and drinking is very inexpensive, granted the places around the square are more pricey than outside of that area, but still very reasonable. We did some homework on Tripadvisor and ate in restaurants two of our three nights just outside the tourist area's but still well in the city centre, I can't remember exactly what the bill was but on both occasions it was incredible value for money and the food and wine was top notch.

Auschwitz was a numbing and mind blowing day out, but one I think we all should do to pay respects to the poor souls who had to endure the horrors of that God forsaken camp, I would certainly recommend it to anyone.

The other trips were the salt mines and Schindlers factory both of which were a wonderful experience.

Fabulous city. My personal recommendation is visit Auschwitz on Day 1. So that the beautiful city in the following days soothes the soul.

As people have already said, it's an amazing city and far from expensive. The city isn't huge so you can walk around most of it, the main square is beautiful and plenty of pubs/bars/restaurants on it and down the side streets off it.

Auschwitz is a must, I'd recommend going to the Oscar Schindler museum before visiting, as although we were fairly clued up on the history we learnt a lot there that helped us understand more when we went to Auschwitz. We got a taxi to the factory from our apartment and it was about 4 quid, the taxi drivers outside wanted circa £30 to take us back to the city centre which was half the distance so be careful..... we walked back and stumbled across some great bars full of locals. We arranged out trip to Auschwitz through one of the information centres which included travel, the driver spoke English, German and French to the people on the mini bus and an English speaking tour guide.

Don't worry about the language, most people in Poland speak better English than a lot of English people. In Poland they don't just have English lessons in English, they speak English in other lessons as well.

Love Poland and the people. Visited Gdańsk,Wroclaw and Krakow a few times. I would recommend doing Auschwitz in the morning and the Salt mines in the afternoon. As others have said, Auschwitz is a very emotional and impactive experience and the Salt mines are wonderful and makes a more pleasurable end to the day. It’s a long day but well worth it.

For breakfast if you are not eating at the hotel, there are cafes called Milk Bars, one in centre of Krackow. Look them up on line. Excellent value, full English, Irish breakfast and lunches as well.very good quality and cheap as chips!!

The House of Beer is a must visit, loads of different beers as the name suggests, great atmosphere and lots of different rooms inside. Staff very helpful.
The vodka bar also good to visit. Very small but you can try a selection of vodkas which all come together.
I could go on but you will love Krakow I’m sure and you will find your own favourite place.
Finally, we took the train from the airport to centre of Krakow. It’s dead simple and that’s rich coming from me. The station is within the airport, you can buy your ticket on the train and it takes about 20 minutes and costs around £2.

Just be aware when changing money to go to a proper exchange bureau, check the rates as some are a bit dodgy. Look this up on line before you go.

Enjoy and let us know how you get on.

Been a couple of times, you’ll love it.
The salt mine is a good trip on top of the two you’ve got planned.
Check out all the cellar bars, they’re hidden at the end of the little alleys between the shops.
Leave Auschwitz to the last possible moment. It’s unmissable but can knock you for six and leaves you numb for a while.

You can combine the Salt mine tour with Auschwitz.
Agree with above post as it knocked my missus for 6 and she burst into tears that night whilst we were dining out.
Lots of mini bus companies online offering this option.

Although it is cheaper than UK, no way is it “Cheap as chips” .
There is a regular train from Airport into City if your Hotel is in the centre.

They use their own currency so might be best to buy ( at least) some in advance.I expect ( never been to Poland so can’t confirm) most bank atms will also accept your debit card but there will be a charge by the provider and your own bank on conversion.
Have to say I have never really thought about visiting but maybe given some of the comments on here might be worth a punt in the future.

Take a walk through the Jewish quarter, there's some decent bars down there. Also, if not already mentioned above, be careful with taxis (eg. to/from the airport), some will rip you off.

Been loads of times, if you head away from.the main square, and head to an area 10 minutes walk called TYTANO ask for directions..it's the old Krakow tobacco factory, that has been converted into lots of trendy bars, restaurants. It's packed with people.great atmosphere

We booked an airport transfer from the airport to the city centre that wasn’t expensive and through a reputable company, and then took the train on the way back to the airport that was cheap. But your right 1966 if you just jump into a taxi outside the airport you will get spanked!

Krakow is a wonderful part of the world. Go on a walking trip with one of the local guides so you can learn the fascinating history of the city and admire its beauty. If there are a number of you and you all leave a reasonable tip how can the guide be anything other than grateful. You will sample good food and enjoy good local beer at very reasonable prices. If you plan and budget you should certainly have enough money. Auschwitz is a deeply moving and humbling experience.

Take some tissues mate as the concentration camps will get a bit dusty !!!

The scale of them will blow your mind and the stories the rooms have border of the unbelievable, but sadly, these thing happened

I'd go as far as saying it's one of my favourite cities

We went before lockdown, we did Auschitzh and salt mines in the same day, like you a place I always wanted to visit.
Cheap as chips, we stayed just off the main square, brilliant jaz bar at the side of the square aswell.

It’s an amazing place, not too expensive, Polish beer is strong!!! We booked the Auschwitz tour with an English guy called Phil, took us in a 6 seater so not hearded round with a coach load, he also did our airport transfers www.krakowtours.co.uk
Worth looking into

Forgot to mention the Jewish quarter, we only stumbled across the bars mentioned above on the last night. There's a pool with fountains and across from that a little side street with an arch, went through that and it was amazing, loads of bars and restaurants.

Agree about Plazow. We went there one December and wandering around Plazow in late afternoon was very unnerving. I still think I saw some mysterious face at the window of Amon Goeth's house! ( and no I hadn't been drinking!!)

Used to work in Poland and have been back there every year for past 20 years although I have not been to Krakow for a few years but it is a fantastic place and everyone under 30 can speak English.
They're doing quite well with covid at the moment, 73 new cases yesterday.

We went a few years back and stayed near the main square (allegedly the largest in Europe)
Prices very reasonable as well. I believe there is a hidden city under the main plaza which we didn’t get to see.
The Salt Mines were incredible and by contrast Auschwitz was very heart rending.
Not really impressed with Schindler’s Museum in all honesty.
Transport very easy to use (especially as one of our group was of Polish decent and speaks fluent Polish).
Plenty of buses, fancy horse drawn carriages (a bit like Blackpool) and tricycle “taxis”
I am sure you will enjoy it Limerick.

I booked two "free" walking tours, before we went there a couple of years ago, with Krakow Explorers. As Rupert says, they like you to tip (based only on your own experience).

Both our guides were great, very entertaining and knowledgeable. Check out their web site and pre-book if you're interested. All tours start in the main square.

The tour to the Jewish Quarter is one I would highly recommend and ends fairly close to the Schindler's Factory Museum.

We also did the Old Town and Wawel Castle tour which is also worth the effort.

There's loads you can do for free but it's also worth shopping around for Auschwitz tours (try to find one that includes Birkenhau, for completion). The Salt Mines are also worth the effort.

Have a good time, but prepare before you go! It'll be worth it.
