Lancs v Northants CC

Josh Bohannon needed 112 at the start of the game for 1000 runs for the season, this is his 18th innings thus far........another really good effort from him

From an England perspective I don't think he scores quickly enough these days, but that's a result with a Red Rose 🌹 hat on 👍

Big partnership coming up in the context of the game, Balderson at 8 is realistically a couple of places too low, so fingers crossed him and Bohannon can get us as far beyond Northants score as poss. If they do given the fragility of Northants all season in Championship cricket then we'll be firmly in the box seat 👍🌹🏏

I don't want to jinx these two but not for the first time this season B&B look top quality.

Both will be on the England radar but as mentioned above Boho may not be considered due to his slower strike rate. Baldy on the other hand bowls well too and we know they love the players that can do all disciplines.

I'm going to adjust my first innings lead, we need to get over 100. The new ball is key, it has been a tough spell to bat but we are starting to look more comfortable. Bohannon really is in fine form.

Balderson gets his ton . . . I think we have another FEC on ours hands 👍 🌹

Lead is now 215 with 8 down.

Sounds like Blatherwick is carrying an injury and might not bowl.

In that case score as many as we can now, I very much doubt the declaration even entered their heads given the forecast etc,

We've probably got enough now tbh but the further ahead of the game we can get now the better!!

Balderson out for 115 . . caught going for quick runs.

Blatherwick has come out with a runner so looks like it won't bowl.

I would have got them in and had a quick dart before lunch.

Nah, keep them toiling in the field and let the tail have a bit of fun, every run scored now is effectively double.

Balderson has been a bright spark in what has been a pretty disappointing and frustrating season overall. Looks tidy.

I make that a career-best knock for Bailey at the end too.

The CC season does feel disappointing but if you look at the facts it tells a different story -

Bohannon is the leading run scorer in Div 1 cricket (1063) . . . he's just gone quietly about his business.

Balderson is No.2 in the Div 1 batting averages and is an all rounder!!

We have 3 players in the top 6 batting averages in Div 1 CC.

We are the only team to have beaten Surrey . . . and it was away and a demolition.

Bailey and Williams have continued to be one of the best opening pairs in the country.

We have only lost one CC game this season.

The problem has been the number of draws - 7. This is the most of any team and although not always down to the weather it hasn't helped.

A couple of big name players have been very disappointing - Vilas and CDG in particular.

If you look at the batting averages a number of our players have done really well. Others like Vilas have been awful and you would question why they are still being played.

In terms of winning games, you have to take 20 wickets. Time and again Bailey and Williams have taken the first 4 wickets, time and again opposition have still posted decent scores because our back up bowling isn’t up to it.

That means we are only likely to win games where at least 9-10 sessions are possible.

In contrast to Surrey who only need 6-7 sessions to win a game because of their bowling strength in depth. Therefore can cope better with rain stoppages.

The fact that the wickets at OT are lifeless makes me question whether cricket is a priority to the senior non cricket management. Or is cricket an adjunct to an entertainment venue, which let’s face it is incredibly fortunate to have MUFC down the road to provide regular punters for the hotel, for parking pre game etc.

A number of players have left the club when they get to 26-27 and are moving onto a new contract Some of them were a loss to the club, some weren’t. But it’s a consistent pattern, and Josh Bohannon falls into this category at the end of next season,

Finally the inward looking culture within the cricket management (Chapple played all his career for us, so did Chilton and if Crofty joins that will be a third) just doesn’t allow for the influx of new ideas. Which I think we are desperately in need of.

Very good post . . . Blatherwick & Balderson have been decent but still learning.

I guess they were hoping for more wickets from CDG and obviously lost Mahmood again through injury.

I'm not sure why Luke Wood hasn't played that much CC cricket . . I know he's been playing white ball games but think he's been available and not selected for some red ball games.

If you look at our bowlers available at the start of the season - Bailey, Williams, Anderson, Mahmood, Wood, Gleeson, Blatherwick, Balderson, CDG, Mitchell, Parkinson, Hartley, Morley . . . there's no better group in county cricket. Injuries, international call ups and poor form has cost us.

Yeah, very much aware of most of this. As I've said above and in other threads, there's been some real positives and bright points to the season and certain individuals have for sure been a pleasure to watch at points.

Overall, for me, it has been a frustrating one nonetheless and things like being the only team to beat Surrey and only losing one CC so far don't really placate it for me (for others maybe it does, but it depends how you view things). Really want to see us win something; I think this is our 8th year without doing so and that makes just 2 trophies in 25 years.

I really felt that we were building up towards a knockout year and that we should have done better, particularly in the T20. Also find a lot of the great points @hampshire_exile add to aforementioned frustration.

Super Wellsy! Get in lads.

On a separate note, also nice to see Parky rebuilding some confidence with Durham. Match figures of:

47.4, 6, 138, 8

And got Pujara twice who's a tidy player of spin.

Really pleased for Parky . . . like Hammy before him - it looks like there's an international standard player somewhere in there but for whatever reason it's gone off track a bit.

A number of players seem to have left Lancs and recovered elsewhere after losing their way?

Parkys bowling problems came post his brief England appearance.

But instead of supporting him through them, Lancs senior management drip fed into the media that they also had concerns about his fielding and batting.

That led to an inevitable fall out and his decision to move on. Delighted to see Parky doing well.

I hope Jack Morley can step up to be the spinner. If he does though, he bats 11 like Parky so can only be a like for like replacement not an improvement.

Lancs seemed to pin their hopes on Tom
Hartley who is indisputably a much better batter than Parky - and indisputably nowhere near as good a bowler. The latter has been proven by his bowling performances this

It’s the international bit that throws them.

they get called up and told they’re good enough BUT if you change all the things that got you called up you’ll be a better player. The Eng management team have always done it. They did the same to Jimmy and he had to go away and find the Jimmy of old.

Its one reason why I don’t care if they win or lose as long as it’s a good game.
