Leadership

Right now I think this is what we are lacking the most. We don't have a leader on the pitch imo, and you look to the sidelines and the dugout and I don't think we have one there either. We ought to make this the absolute priority over the next few weeks.

In summer, we signed completely the wrong manager, sold our best player in the last hour of the transfer window, and failed to strengthen any area of the pitch at all. What we're seeing now is the inevitable consequence of those decisions. It was a complete and total disaster of a summer, and my question is if most of the fans could see this, why couldn't the board? It really was very obvious. I get Critchley leaving was a blow and disrupted our plans, but it's not like we made a knee jerk appointment, it took us a while to decide on MA.

Then we have the ridiculous decision to sign Bridcutt who is just a waste of a wage, as is Stewart. We complain about our injury list but some of it is of our own making. He was a panic signing because we failed on all our main targets, and with his record was never likely to feature much. I hope we're not paying him a lot. Again, it's show a lack imagination and dare I say effort when a manager goes back to his previous club for players (Bridcutt and Fiorini), and the same can be said of a club that goes back to a previous manager. It didn't work with Grayson, god knows why SS thought this would be different. Talk about not learning from your mistakes.

We now need some leadership from the board, by swallowing their pride and making the tough decisions that need to be made. MA is not a championship manager, and does not exude the belief in the club that you need from the person in charge. Saying "Coming up against good teams, we've got to remember who we are a little bit" encapsulates his attitude towards us. Contrast with Ollie who didn't believe at any point we should be merely grateful to be in this league and always had the attitude we could achieve - it's half the battle won. I say to MA that we do remember who we are - a club that has spent most of its existence in the top two leagues - we absolutely should be in this division. It's where we belong and we should be competing better than we are doing.

We need a new manager, one who might galvanise the fans and players and feed some positivity into the club, and we need a couple of Championship experienced leaders on the pitch. It isn't too late but we can't leave it much longer.

Again, you question why they let Keogh go without a proper replacement. It's almost like anyone who was good last season has been let go without any thought as to who was going to fill their boots.

Yep exactly that. There hasn't been anything like adequate replacements brought in for the players that left. It's not like we didn't have all summer to put in place contingencies. We signed Williams who isn't a Keogh replacement because it's his experience and leadership that was crucial.

We couldn't manage this in the summer and now the club is in a worse position.

Yes it's always more difficult in January anyway and as you say we're less of an attractive proposition now. It'll probably cost more now so it just shows why the summer business we did (or didn't do) was such a massive failure. How on earth do you sell the club right now to good players?
One things for sure, if Appleton has any input on who we target then we won't be setting our sights very high - after all, we all have to remember who we are a little bit.
