Leeds Utd - Club Statement re Gnonto

Appreciate there are plenty on here with an active dislike of Leeds Utd, however the current situation with Wilfried Gnonto apparently throwing his toys out of the pram & refusing to play for Leeds in midweek & today after being denied a move to Everton indicates an arrogant & unprofessional young man with an opinion of himself which exceeds his ability.

Whilst there’s little to no point in keeping an unhappy player this sort of brattish behaviour does him no favours at all.

Club statement:

‘Earlier this week, Willy Gnonto and his representatives were informed by the club that he would not be sold this summer.

Following those conversations, Willy felt he was unable to play in Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup tie with Shrewsbury Town.

Despite training for the last two days, Willy has informed Daniel Farke that he still does not feel able to play this weekend and has not travelled to Birmingham for the game tomorrow.

This is now an internal disciplinary matter and the club will make no further comment, other than to reiterate that Willy Gnonto is not for sale.’

I shudder to think how Brian Clough would have reacted to such a situation if a Forest player had tried such a move back in the day….

Personally, I wouldn’t even put him in the reserves - I’d leave him to just train with the youth team. Apparently he fears his Euro international chances with Italy will be adversely affected by not playing in the Prem, which may or may not be the case, but maybe something he, or his representatives, should have considered before he signed a 5-year contract with no release clause last summer?

Even if he does force a move to Everton in due course, I’d say their Prem status is far from guaranteed, so I would assume he’d be wanting away from there in the event they are relegated.

Surely any club should approach with caution?

“Young man get your arse on that pitch before I kick it on…..” 😄 😄 😄

What is it with football and contracts that nobody seems to think they mean anything. Surely he won’t get paid if he refuses to play. Well done Leeds for sticking to your guns in this case. Everton should support them and withdraw their offer.

You say what would Cloughie have done about it but to be fair to Farke, he would have been able to deal with it far easier than Cloughie would have been able to in the current day.

I hope that makes sense Cabin, apologies if not.

I take your point & certainly didn’t mean to imply any criticism of Farke, who must be wondering what the Hell he has walked into at Elland Road, especially given that rumours are circulating that Luis Sinisterra has also ‘downed tools’.

I wasn't criticising you Cabin but I fecked up what I did try to say.

I meant to say Farke would have been able to deal with the situation far easier in Cloughie's time than Cloughie would be able to deal with it now.

Cloughie gave a young Roy Keane a dig in the ribs and Keane laughs about it now, he'd probably get the nine-ten-jack if he did the same today so I think things would be easier for Farke if he could say, "Get yourself out on that pitch or I'll give thee a dry slap".
