His contract ended with them this month. They only gave him a short term contract to see how he did. He's done well for them and that's got interest from other clubs offering him a bigger wage. Burton fans weren't happy to see him leave at all, but thats the risk you run when you only give a six month contract.

I'm fairly sure he was out of contract and thus under no obligation to play.

If he'd been shit for 6 months then Burton would have tossed him out into the cold without a second thought, but because he's been decent for them, some feel like he owes them. Not how it works unfortunately.
