Signed on 12 month deal- not sure we needed another left back but maybe can fill in at cb or offer versatility while husband is injured?

Husband to go CH for me. I prefer him in that position. He played there with MacDonald on left and was good. I thought thats how we would be playing this season before we sent MacDonald out on loan.

A very exciting signing this one. Someone who is proven at this level and will surely go straight into the starting XI when up to speed.

6 goals in 30 games for Ipswich from left-back
In the running for Ipswich's player of the year last year
Husband now expected to move to centre-back

Just had a peek on Ipswich’s forum to see what they are saying about it as it seems they were favs to sign him. There seem to be a lot of bitter arrogant farm hands on there! The majority don’t seem to rate us and are extremely patronising. To be fair a couple of voices of reason have said that we are putting together a pretty decent team together and they are not so big compared to us anymore.
For those with their heads in the sand or the past you better wake up and take note, the tangerine machine are here to pop your tractors😄

We get the same crap on here, to be fair.

Great signing.
This surely means that Husband will go CB. I think Critchley likes him as a player and a character to have in dressing room. He has played left mid for Ipswich as well

Anyway round this is good business and gives us strength and quality in depth .

Put it this way
If Sunderland or Ipswich had signed him we would be jealous. Another who could easily chip in with 5 goals
I am wondering if Garbutt himself only wanted a 1 year deal in the hope things will be better next summer so he has chance of a better contract

Some on the Ipswich forum rated him as a left sided mid which along side Ward and Robson would give us some great quality in that area at this level.
Maybe that's where Critch sees him.
Whatever, another good addition to the squad and how fantastic to have an owner who is brave enough to believe at this time of such uncertainty.
Anyone selected for the first team now is going to have to be bang at it to keep their place for sure.

Massive gamble by Sadler, all this money spent and the season could be written off by Covid.

When it comes to the 1 year contract. I am probably completely wrong, but it could be that we have been able to offer a higher wage for him due to our high earners only counting as a average wage with the salary cap. With a 1 year contract, we could either offer him another contract if we go up or let him go if we don't allowing us to stay withing the wage cap next season. Like I said, I'm probably wrong but it's just a thought seen as though he has turned down deals with both Sunderland and Ipswich.

With the policy on all our other transfers being for 2 or 3 years I'd be interested to know the reasoning behind the 1 year deal.
Great though that we can attract players here ahead of Clubs like Sunderland and Ipswich. It may well be a wish by the player to stay in the Northwest but money will have come into the equation...it always does.

The guy who held Leeds United to ransom. Hmm-hardly done much in the game and I'd question his commitment personally.

Seems a strange one to me. There is no doubting his quality at League 1 level and I can see the manager playing him further forward in a wide left position. Mitchell already has done enough to retain the left back position.
I hope this doesn't limit our chances of strengthening in the positions we really need to strengthen in such as centre half, right back and a goal scorer!

Might be why he has only signed a 12 month deal, to put himself in the window for a big contract from a Championship club next season?
Yup maybe so and good luck to anyone with talent pursuing a dream but personally he doesnt seem the sort of player you guys need, where people like say Thomas Ince* didnt really give Blackpool FC the respect it deserved and used the club as a payday rather than a career option.

*not looking for a debate on this-just trying to make the point.

Mitchell could play further forward.

Leeds were in League 1 in 2009 and Everton an established Premier League club. I think they call it a no-brainer!

Aye but we had it with a number of players (Tom Taiwo another) who never made the grade and progressed much further, where quite simply they were after a big pay day rather than looking to develop as a footballer.
Beckford however was one with talent and the right worth ethic where I had no problem with him running out his contract and taking the 'no brainer' option, and I'm sure with the Seasiders there have been many who you could name in either camp.

I think that might be quite close to the money.

Could it be that we've signed Garbutt for 1 year because we can't currently sign the centre half we want. So instead, we've freed up Husband to play at centre half while also covering for Mitchell who's only question mark is a bad injury. I don't know, just speculating. It's a strange one because I just can't see how Mitchell and Garbutt can play in the same team considering the system we're playing. And they both seem too good to be sat on the bench.

Interesting times. One things for sure - when you're seriously thinking that KaiKai might only be good enough as back up, you know you have a good side.

hes got a wicked left foot on him. Played in the game against us at Portman Road last season whipping low dangerous balls in from the left hand side.

Crainey was a Scottish international and a good player who was sorely missed in the POF v Watford, and a decent bloke who respected every club he played for.

Sorry certainly wasn’t trying to diss the excellent Stephen Crainey, merely comparing the forgetful Mr Ancelotti to a handful of forgetful Leeds fans, who set about him after he signed for BFC. Anyway wish I hadn’t bothered now obviously.

No-it was a fair point to make. I once organised a pre match road show for Leeds fans in the Old Bridge, and it was ruined by a drunken opinionated minority who abused Peter Lorimer that night.
Sometimes I despair at the lack of respect people show to others, where sometimes they use football as an excuse.

Anyone abusing Peter Lorimer must be crazy. What a right foot.
It amazes me why supporters think if they howl at and boo a player, especially a young one, that they will suddenly improve, as if they are deliberately underperforming, Madness.

Mackem views:

Great signing for Blackpool. They could be contenders for promotion this season.

Strange that they had already brought in Demetri Mitchell who plays the same role as Garbutt (LB/LWB) yet they've got Garbutt in. Along with CJ Hamilton they've got a totally new left hand side. Still don't think there CB's are good enough to get them promoted.

I said all through pre season they will be the team to watch this season. Thats a very good signing for them.

Definitely. A bit like Posh though. They have lost their main goalscorer.

Refuse to believe he is any find of world beater if he is signing for Blackpool tbh.

Blackpool building a decent side there.

I wish we had got him in to play LWB. He's best at wing back rather than left back.

As for Garbutt being a better defender than Hume, that's simply not backed up by his time at Ipswich. He's everything that Hume was last season but without the time in his career to develop on his weaker points.

Garbutt is 27 and has failed at championship level. He’s nowhere near the player people seem to think he is and was played further up for Ipswich a fair few times because he was a liability at the back.

Aye him being a better defender is a total myth. Ipswich and Oxford fans see his attacking play as his strength for this level.

Blackpool have worked the transfer market/wage cap very well. Got a load of signings in, vote for the cap then had a bit of wriggle room to add a bit more quality after it. I hate League One.

You would think this Garbutt was Roberto Carlos the way some are going on.

He is way better than him mate.

Got a few headlines in the Nationals

On the Oxford forum there's a long Garbutt thread from his season there (2018/19) and they seemed to be less impressed with Garbutt than Ipswich fans were. They had a pretty low opinion of him as a defender. Suggests Ipswich learnt from that and played him in a more attacking role. We will have to wait and see if Critchely uses him like an Andy Roberston, or as an attacking midfield player - and how he fits Mitchell and Garbutt into the team, assuming both will play - which i think they will.

It may well be that Mitchell plays left back and is encouraged to get forward as much as possible knowing having Garbutt on the left side of the midfield 3 will provide cover, but then I have no idea who he would replace out of what appears to be Robson/Keshi/Ward.

I can't see Garbutt playing on the left of the front three.

Maybe we are all being charmed by what a few Ipswich fans have said, and the reality is we have signed him on a 1 year prove yourself deal and isn't penciled in to be a definite starter, similar to the Williams deal.

Well NC says that signing Garbutt is a sign of how far this club has progressed so he must see him as a big player. I'm intrigued really. I wonder if Critchley even knows what he is going to do? He could potentially use them both down the left and take KK/Lubala out of the team. But he paid a significant fee for Lubala apparently. I can't see Anderson being dropped, but maybe Ward could be. Doesn't really add up though. Maybe it's all about player rotation during a heavy winter, two games a week.

I think player rotation is a big part of it.
Very busy schedule coming up throughout the season and we play a high energy / high intensity style of football. Rotation and strength in depth will be vital to our success.
Also, Mitchell has a history of injuries so NC might be reluctant to play him every game.

Garbutt's injury record isn't great!
