Released by Wolves. He looked a really exciting prospect when he broke through at Rochdale at the age of 15. He's had a few loan spells with the last one at Scunthorpe with his ex-Rochdale manager Keith Hill.

With hindsight he would probably have been better advised staying at Rochdale for a couple of seasons and playing on a regular basis. Also, he doesn't seem to have developed physically only 5'6" so this may have hindered his progress. Probably worth looking at on a trial basis if he has nothing else lined up.

He's a right back isn't he? We have three. Maybe one for Dobbie to work with.

If it was more of a position of need, maybe. Looked a real Rolls-Royce as a very young kid at ‘Dale and I remember him having a decent game against us for Ipswich a couple of years ago … though anyone who plays against us at Portman Road tends to look good.

More evidence that getting a big move too young is no panacea

You can’t beat playing in games that matter.

Alex Baptiste the prime example of this. Started playing professional men’s football young, had over 150 games under his belt by the time he came to us, and made a very successful career built on his games at Mansfield.

I hope Matheson finds a club, but he may well need to go down to the National League to rebuild his career. If he gets a League 1 gig, he may not play much. and regular first team football is what he needs,
