Lytham Baths

Was discussing Lytham baths with the missus and from memory it was salt water, had a small spring board and two diving boards

One about 5' high and one about 12' high. And I think the deep end was about 10' deep.

Can anyone confirm please?

Learnt to swim there in 1978. It was freshwater. The description of the boards sounds correct.

Yes definitely in Lytham! 😜
Used to service the pool at Rossall School years ago and it was hard work keeping them maintained, including cleansing out the sand filters which yielded quite a few things over the years.
The cost of heating these things is phenomenal, and even for a relatively small pool it runs into thousands of kilowatts just to keep it warm.

Where was Lytham baths?, me and my pals used to get the bus to St Annes to go to the open air baths there as the quality of the local totty was pretty decent compared to the Blackpool pools. I didn't know there was one at Lytham or we might have stayed on the bus to Lytham 😜

It is the large building, with the portico dated 1927, now known as the Lytham Assembly Rooms, where Dicconson Terrace meets Central Beach on the Green, just down the street from the Square. It used to hold the Fylde Scouts swimming gala each year, which is when I visited. Fylde council closed it in 1987 to save money, as it was a small old-fashioned 25-yard pool, and focused on the YMCA instead.

Ahh Lytham baths. I was nearly drowned there when I was about ten by a big lass who was pretending to be 'a lifesaver'. Afterwards we'd get watery chicken soup from a machine in the foyer. Taught my three lads to swim there as well.

We had our primary school swimming lessons there until it closed. I got my 10m width certificate there. If memory serves the changing rooms were upstairs to the pool.

The council may have closed it to save money , but the foundations to the pool had gone and it was leaking thousands of gallons into who knows where . It was basically impossible to fix so it had to be drained and closed . I knew the baths manager at the time Tony Woods very well .

This brings back memories. We moved to Blackpool in 1959 from Yorkshire and it must have been very early 60's when at primary school that me and my brother had swimming lessons at Lytham baths. It was only years later that I found out why my Dad was so keen for us to learn to swim. One of his brothers had drowned in the canal near Hebden Bridge when he was a kid. I ended up working as a lifeguard for a few summers in the early to mid 70's when I was a student. Raging was right about the local talent. Happy days.

My grandad was the “engineer” at Lytham baths probably between the wars. He played water polo for Lytham and was a lifeboatman.

The deep end was 9 ft 3 in, shallow end 4ft 6 in. Used to love going on my bike after primary school, the coldest limeade was dispensed from the vending machine.

Yep, limeade and iced gems. Aged about 8, I once miscalculated the bus fare back to St. Annes - asked the conductor how fare I could go for 2d, and he said 'here'. Turfed me off at Seafield.

As kids used to get the bus from Warton to go to the baths most Saturdays ,,,,I was at Kirkham Carr Hill ,,,we used to walk down to the baths in Kirkham to do swimming lessons !!
