Over there for Davis Cup tennis in late Nov.
Any recommends for bars, restaurants, general sights to see.
Never stayed in city before, only ever been there for onward transfer from airport.

Fantastic place, stayed in the gay area of Torremolinos, caught the train into the city and cab back, loads of bars, tapas and even a starbucks, nice wander round the harbour/port, shops and restaurants. Some great historic architecture too. Has its tat, selling fake gear if thats what you want

Just lose yourself on the back streets of the old town
The number and quality of tapas bars around is just brilliant
Nice walks up to and around the castle area.
If you are lucky Malaga might be playing at home, we went to watch them in a top of the league clash and it was really enjoyable (please note that they don’t serve alcohol inside the ground!)

Train into town from the airport is easy. Train runs from an underground platform beneath the airport at the level that departures go from. The hotel next to the station is nice; roof top pool and bar.

Loads of great bars and restaurants to choose from. El Pimpi one of my favourites, also rooftop bars at Marriotts and also at Room mate Larios . Enjoy , it's a great city , and reasonably compact .

Just got back from there last week and been a number of times before, absolutely superb city and one of my favourites in Europe.

We stayed at the H10 Croma Hotel which I'd highly recommend, great room overlooking the old town and a brilliant rooftop terrace with pool, music and and drinks.

If you walk a couple of minutes up the street from the hotel and over the main road you come to Malaga Centro train station which connects to the airport and down to Torremolinos, Benalmadena and Fuengerola, if you get off at Plaza Mayor there is a superb shopping centre with designer outlets as well as Zara, Bershka etc. and lots of bars and restaurants etc.

Malaga old town is special, so many tapas bars, restaurants, food outlets and the atmosphere in the evenings is special, just loads of couples, families and people just enjoying themselves without all the idiots who frequent the resorts, El Pimpi Tapas Bar is the "go to" place in the old town but it's one of so many to choose from.

The best rooftop terrace for drinks and music especially as the sun sets is on the roof of the AC Marriott Hotel, well worth a visit and it also has a nice restaurant up there as well as bar food.

We visited a fantastic brewery/bar called La Fabrica, it's just further down from Malaga Centro station, it's well worth a visit for craft beer and live music. I'll post the link below.

Enjoy, it's a fantastic city.

Hola amigo, in the old town, not far from the Cathedral and Castillo, is the 'Bodega Bar El Pimpi'.
Great tapas bar and restaurant, originally owned and frequented by Antonio Banderas. Well worth a visit, as are many of the bars in that area of Malaga which is a fantastic and vibrant Spanish city, enjoy! 👍

If you’re there for a while Gibraltar is well worth a visit (about an hour and forty mins by car).
Malaga itself is great though.

Malaga is a brilliant city as noted by the other replies. there's plenty to do - the alcazar, picasso museum, fine beach, atmospheric old town for mooching, no shortage of fantastic tapas and plenty of quality bars and restaurants to keep you fed, watered and entertained.

i'd throw in a visit to 'casa antigua guardia'. it's a little slice of malagueno history - an old, no frills, spit and sawdust bar serving local wine and vermouth straight from the barrel (and picasso was a fan, apparently). it's by the market hall which is also great with spanking fresh fish and shellfish a specialty at its tapas bars.

i was there again last month and it was every bit as enjoyable as my previous visits - i'd recommend it to anyone.

They’ve got the hop on hop off bus which is always good for a nice easy touristy jaunt around the city too

We're there for a week at the beginning of December - staying in Calle Marín García in the Old Town. Sone good advice on here - looking forward to it.

Landed in Malaga last night.

Was here very recently as well.

The advice about the old town is spot on.

Hotels can be expensive so look at Airbnb’s.

There are 4 of us and we have rented a 4 bed villa that is massive with a private pool for £160 a night and it’s amazing.

Just back myself. Can only repeat what Hert / Tigger and Raging said.
The local train/s down along the coast are cheap as chips if you get bored and wish to explore further afield. The best bit of Malaga is very few grockles, so pile in the local tapas places. Good beach/es just walking distance east of the port.

El Tintero. Chiringuito in the El Palo suburb. Fantastic fresh fish. Featured recently on TV programme with Fred, Gino and Ramsay.

Stayed at the Vincci Posado, an affordable 5 star in a great location.

The marina and beach nearby is great. The castle is worth a visit for the views. There is an English (protestant) graveyard on the way up. Before the British Consulate got permission for the graveyard the Spanish would prop up the bodies of the English Protestants on the beach and let the tide take them away because they weren't Catholic! 🤣

A bit of Spanish is definitely handy, like most non touristy places most don't speak English.

In the old town there is a cathedral, La Manquita, with just one tower, the locals still share their frustrations as to why it was never finished.
