Managers/chairman's approach that rejected Blackpool job

Just thinking back Critchley was about the 3rd or 4th manager that was approached. After Karl Robinson, and QPR assistant John Eustace.
I wonder if they are regretting turning down the approaches?

What other managers have rejected Blackpool over the years?

Did Owen Coyle turn down before Holloway?

Was it not every manager in the football league ,when they were told ,the wages they would be on (under the previous regime ),the killer was when barcode teeth said out of season you will get 90pounds per week plus a bucket and sponge to clean all the bird shit off the seats 🤣🤣🤣.

Coyle turned the job down like 3 times. But for more on that buy my book

Bill Shankly was approached in the late 70's to be an interim manager and Mick Channon as a player manager after Bob Stokoe resigned in 78/79, if what was reported in the Green is anything to go by.

Terry McPhillips is the only one who ruled himself out whilst still the current manager!

Richie Barker was another before we ended up with Gary Bowyer who got us promoted so that turned out to be a blessing.

Then of course there was the parade of big names before Sam Allardyce got the job in ‘96. From memory:

Terry Yorath
Peter Reid
Steve Black (‘a fitness coach who never played league football’ but apparently aced Billy Bingham’s tests, according to his book)

An intriguing one is ‘Terry Venables’ assistant from Barcelona’ who apparently got an interview before Billy Ayre took the job … never yet found a name

I think Critchley is the perfect fit for what Sadler is trying to do here.
A bold appointment though..it would have been very easy to just go for anyone on the managers merry go round.

I've often wondered if Jimmy Armfield was ever considered a few times in the 70s, especially the late 70s when after Alan Brown left we went through a few managers . He left Leeds in 1978, so the timing would have fitted.

Billy Davies was never a goer due to the number of staff he wanted to bring with him. Os would never have paid it.

Coyle seemed to have been the go to after each manager left/sacked and was close at one point I believe.

I remember Steve Cotterill was always linked, early 00s I think.

Allan Harris was Venables assistant at Barca.

Emlyn Hughes after he was potted at Rotherham. Invited for talks but was not interested. Gary Rowett met Koko for talks at Koko’s house but unsurprisingly asked not to be considered.

Billy Davies was interviewed in the Corner Flag while BSA were having a fans forum in the West Stand. You could see him across the way.

If I remember right Neil Warnock once distanced himself from the job saying ‘ no there’s no money there’ not sure if he was officially offered but think a question was asked. Now who could have been running the place then🤔😡😡😡

Thank fuck for that.

Good news is that Sadler will have learned from his 2 appointments so far.

One was the obvious appointment with past experience but dull and conservative (ultimately that was his playing style too). The other was ambitious and maverick and very risky.
The risky and maverick approach must have formed many of his business successes and has born fruit in football too.

Always take the risky option Simon. Dull is always dull. Maverick you can always stop if it’s going spectacularly wrong but could be the roaring success that the rest didn’t dare take on

Joe Royle was considered for the managers job before Sam Ellis was appointed, now that would of been interesting.

Wasn’t Brian Flynn heavily linked around 2014? But fans didn’t want him
Brian, bless him. The only issue there was unless you were one of the privileged fans to stand in the technical area, he was very difficult to spot with the naked eye.

Dave Bamber applied one time and was interviewed I believe. Done very well for himself in the building trade instead.

True story.
I saw Colin Todd sat in a Merc on the prom on a quiet week day morning, by South Pier.
The club were without a manager at the time and were know to be interviewing.

Have to say, the thought of Colin Todd didn't excite me at the time tbh.
