Managers who live off 'being paid off'

Wonder which manager has enjoyed the most time sat on his backside having enjoyed the spoils of being paid off for being shit. Notice Appleton signed a two year deal at Charlton which is nice compensation which he can add to the money he got from us (as well as other clubs he's been binned from).
Considering he is amongst the least charismatic people in the game, really is hard to see why so many employ him only to have to pay him off.

How do you know any of that? Have you seen his contract, do you know of any 'break' clauses. Yet more speculation that people will comment on as fact.

I think this is actually a topic where supporters are quite ignorant of the realities of the business of professional football. It sounds like managers being rewarded for failure, but there's going to be plenty of cases where the guy knows exactly what he's walking into - because the owner has been up front - and the 'pay off' is effectively for acting as collateral damage for getting a club through a challenging business cycle.

We had plenty during the Oyston years, but I reckon Apples is a classic 'Red Adair' (topical reference alert) who is effectively paid danger money to deal to take the flack for knowingly playing with a bad hand. It's worth the reputational risk because other than a select few, managerial careers will last as fleetingly as playing careers - the 2 options being easily the best earning period for a professional in the game.

Someone like Apples will always find himself a coaching gig if he needs to, but whilst he can he's probably accepting that it's worth taking the worst job in the best position unless he's looking at a nice first team coaching role at the big clubs.

I should add, I've no idea if any of this is true... 😆

Hopeless Hughton has joined in the lucrative compo bingo once again after his catastrophic efforts with Ghana at the AFCON.

Newcastle had to pay Pardew for his full 8 year contract. He got sacked 3 years into so 5 years being paid for nothing. Steve Bruce got £8m off them as well when he was sacked.

Sacked 6 months into a 4 year contact, I imagine he got a fair bit.
If there were breaks every 12 months wouldn’t that just make it a 12 month rolling contract?

I'd imagine it's possible that a manager has the option to stay on as well as the club. If either party wants to terminate then it's on them. That might not be considered a rolling contract in the same way as a player may get where its the club and the club alone decides to extend.

Like I say, I'm imagining... but it's fun to speculate!
