Matthew Pennington signs

Appleton was respected enough to get the likes of Fiorini, Williams, Patino, Rogers, Poveda in on loan, I doubt NC would've had materially more pull.
I'd argue Simms, Ballard, Embleton and Gabriel (on loan initially) were much better than this seasons loan players

I think he got as good or better in L1 which takes some doing.
I think that's relative to the average player in the division, chuck in Simms, Ballard, Embleton or Gabriel from 2020/21 into a lower end Championship side and, at best, they'd be average, if not simply not good enough.

He was respected for getting loans it seemed, whether he could sell the club as well for permanent signings is another matter, he was a nice guy but people say he didn't seem to really believe in what we could be.

Tbh the summer was probably more getting played by agents who offered the player to us, then got them double elsewhere at other clubs at that level.

But Appleton wasn't liked by many pool fans, I wonder if players pick up on the potential unrest for e.g. its hardly hard to find out, more chance of joining a divided club that might be in trouble if fans aren't with a manager.

We'll have to disagree.

And MA didnt really attract longer term signings. Loans join for match experience without the commitment.

I think my point is, and also to @voyeur, is that we vastly over-estimate the importance of the manager in signing players.

If the guy's a c***, or a moron, he won't last long in management, and if he's not, then there's probably precious little difference between one manager and the next.

Another from the Everton youth teams that Critchley has followed through the professional ranks. Just as important his previous managers all mention what a good lad he is and a leader. Also, gives the option of playing three at the back with Reece James or Husband on the left.

Very promising signing, if the rumors are true that Championship clubs and Portsmouth were interested and he chose us then that bodes very well. Shows we are a somewhat attractive proposition and SS is willing to compete in terms of wages offered.

Is no one going to mention the elephant in the room - what is that training top about?!

I don’t want to be too positive but struggling to find anything bad to say about the signing so will focus on the training top. Why are we making kits and training tops with these shitty patterns. Really home we go back to a plain design for the home kit. Last two have been awful.

Apparently he scored in the Merseyside side Derby some years back.

This is definitely the best signing so far, will there be another one soon?

The new lad from Charlton specifically states he signed because of Critchley and the way he sold the club and how he could make him a better player.

I don't wish to be seen as passing judgement, A_T_G, but I would wager the aesthetics of the training tops have a certain finesse about them which perhaps doesn't quite meet with your less refined tastes. Still, each to their own...
