Is he though? Thought clubs activated it not players? This is not a decision or judgment by the club or NC. It is simply Matty activating the extension clause in his existing contract. The club cannot stop him, so this has nothing to do with his ability or future at the club beyond the contract extension.
Either party can activate the extension clause. It makes financial sense for Matty, so he can get fit and get playing again. Is he though? Thought clubs activated it not players?
Also...
"The midfielder’s current deal expired in June 2022, but his new contract will see the 24-year-old remain at Bloomfield Road until at least June 2023, including an option for a further 12 months."
If he's activated an option why is there still an option.
If that happened every time he could keep activating and having another option for the rest of time.
"83 year old Matty Virtue has again re-signed for Blackpool and commits his further retirement to the seasiders"....
No I'm pretty sure this isn't the case. The options Blackpool put on contracts are all in the clubs favour, they cannot be activated by the player, otherwise deadwood would always stick around for an extra year unless they had a better offer, which doesnt happen.Either party can activate the extension clause. It makes financial sense for Matty, so he can get fit and get playing again.
Clubs would activate the clause to prevent the potential loss of an asset.

Blackpool Football Club is pleased to announce that Matty Virtue has agreed a new contract with the Seasiders, keeping him at Bloomfield Road until at least 2022
Where it says ‘at least’, that’s because of the extension clause.
There does appear to be a further option clause beyond 2023, so it could be argued that element is new.
I’m sure we all wish Matty well, whatever our views are on his ability and first team future.

If the Virtue can activate the clause then surely he would of had to wait for his current contract to expire ???Either party can activate the extension clause. It makes financial sense for Matty, so he can get fit and get playing again.

What a load of rubbish! This is not a decision or judgment by the club or NC. It is simply Matty activating the extension clause in his existing contract. The club cannot stop him, so this has nothing to do with his ability or future at the club beyond the contract extension.
It’s not rubbish, it’s a matter of employment law. There are different types of contracts, some have a clause that allows either party to extend the employment relationship for a fixed period. Other types might have a clause where the club can exercise the option unilaterally, although these types have been challenged. This type of contract followed the Bosman ruling, which created high risk that clubs could lose valuable assets. What a load of rubbish!
This is complete bolloxThis is not a decision or judgment by the club or NC. It is simply Matty activating the extension clause in his existing contract. The club cannot stop him, so this has nothing to do with his ability or future at the club beyond the contract extension.
You have seen the contract then? This is complete bollox
No need to see the contract. The club call it a new contract on the website news article. If it's new it's not the same one.You have seen the contract then?
Suggest you research employment law in professional football.
For avoidance of doubt, I’ve not seen the contract either, but when he signed his contract in 2020, the club said it would keep him at the club until ‘at least 2022’, which suggests there was a type of extension clause included.
And Matty's the only player we have who can shoot from outside the box!Critch must see some great potential in him, let's hope he lives up to it.
He never scores shit goals Virtue, always screamers!

For completeness the statement also says that Matty Virtue ‘has signed a further contract extension with the Seasiders’. It’s a new contract because a further 12 month option has now been included. No need to see the contract. The club call it a new contract on the website news article. The reason it said at least 2022 is because his contract was until June 2022, with a 1 year option for the club.Either party can activate the extension clause. It makes financial sense for Matty, so he can get fit and get playing again.

This new contract extends it for another year to where he would have been if the initial option was taken, June 2023 but now we have an option for another year. You have seen the contract then?

Normally there would be a trigger in there to allow for the new contract. I wonder if this is, or isn't the case and if it is the case what happened to trigger it.You have seen the contract then?

"I’m really grateful to the Club for showing that faith in me. With me being injured, it could have been quite easy for the Club to cast me aside and focus on the fit players, but they’ve done the total opposite."
Pretty clear.
This is a very good point IMO. Sends a message to potential future signings too, that Blackpool is no longer the last resort who will treat you like an necessary evil.Shows we are now a caring club, Virtue sweating as his contract runs down whilst injured now secure with a new contract. Sends a positive message to all the players at the club. UTMP
Good player…I don't understand this one.
Even fully fit, he potentially doesn't even make the match day squad IMO.
