Matty Virtue

Early season he showed what he is truly about. Probably the best midfielder at the club when fit. Sadly he's a bit of a Kev Stewart, Keshi Anderson type. Even if he gets fit and starts performing it's a big gamble.

Bearing in mind that Norburn isn't in this squad from Saturday, the question is where does he fit in and who does he replace?

Starting XI: Grimshaw, Husband, Pennington, Dale, Carey, Dembele, Dougall, Rhodes, Beesley, Ekpiteta, Hamilton.
Subs: O'Donnell, Connolly, Morgan, Joseph, Weir, Casey, Lyons.

When he is fit he is a good player, but unfortunately he has had a number of injuries, we are well stocked in midfield so the question is do we really need him?

Dougall
Carey
Norburn
Morgan
Dembele (Loan)
Virtue
Weir (Loan)
Apter
CJ
Dale
Oakley Booth

Development squad
Trusty
Marriette

Its very hard to justify keeping a squad pace open for someone with his injury record over the last 3 years.

Were there not rumours that Dougall might leave.
Norburn injury record with us is not great, and Virtue is so much better than Oakley Booth. So defensive midfield we are not flush with options

Should he be offered a new contract at the end of the season or not?
I've always liked him. A good player, solid and hard working so I say "yes" and end Weir's loan.

Certainly one of the best when fit deserves an extension to his contract.

Best midfielder at the club Jesus Christ we don’t half elevate our players to god status when injured. I’m surprised he didn’t get player of the season last season.

He wasn't with us and we were in the Championship. 🤷 Since our drop to L1 we've lost Stewart, Bowler and Anderson. We've replaced them with Weir, Oakley-Booth, Morgan, Dembele and Norburn. For me only Dembele and Dougall and maybe Carey on their day could challenge (read the next bit carefully) a fully fit, match sharp Virtue when he is playing regularly. If you don't agree with that then I'd ask that you scroll on by or reply showing some respect.

Critch mode on:

10 year contract + solid gold car

Critch mode off:

He's going to have to have some second half of the season... I really like Matty, but he's basically been coming back from injury since before Covid. Srsly. I feel for the lad. He seems to just about get going and look really good for a game or two then he breaks again.

Don’t forget it was Critch that let him go from Liverpool u23s…
And gave him a 3 year contract when he was long term injured here...

Not being pedantic, but would Critch have had that call? Presumably Klopp would have final say on whether he felt he thought Matty V would/could ever make step up and thus whether to release/keep??. I genuinely don't know...

Critch also hauled him off at half time in his first home game in charge...

TBH, 21 pushing 22 years old, never played above L2, that's not a difficult decision whoever took it.

Was due to play some part against Forest Green. Presumably might even start against Barnsley on Tuesday?

All see and raise the pedantry in that I don’t think Jurgs will be giving the ok on buying and selling u23s! The point was I don’t necessarily think he’s a love child of his (despite me joking of such previously!)

He’s looked good when he’s featured this year, he’s got good energy and some quality.

He’s got the rest of the season to get himself fit and to make a contribution, he’s a good league one midfielder if we’re still there next season.

He hasn't looked good missing months on end though.

See also Keshi and Stewart. Great decisions to get rid.

Correct. That’s why he needs to prove his fitness and get in the team before we consider extending him.

Thought he had a presence when he came on the pitch last night - I like him - we have a strong midfield if Critch plays them in a way that they can do their job.
