MCLF - Match blog - Fleetwood Town vs the Mighty

Very enjoyable read again and interesting thoughts. Jekyll and Hyde is right. Seems you didn't feel critical of Critch for the end game stuff. Just the initial selection.

I did pick up from the Imps forum that they considered TOB to be dreadful. They were amused by us signing him.

Do you think we can see off Bromley? They've won their last four.

Oh, and "almost achieves burring down the line" ? What is this?

Should be burrowing down the byline. 🤦

Ah, no worries. I looked it up.

Quite like the idea of Lavs making a whirring sound on the touch line.

burr
/bəː/
verb
gerund or present participle: burring
  1. 1.
    make a whirring sound.
  2. 2.
form a rough edge on (metal).

Great blog, thank you.
We've got to hope that if Critch can ever get a full squad to choose from ie add Norburn, Casey, Gabriel, Joseph and Virtue to add to last night's squad we will be serious contenders.
Then there's Rob Apter to return after Christmas to share the creative burden with Dembele and we might have to issue a storm warning before kick off. 😉

Did you think the late subs were an issue?

That seems to be the consensus, but I think it’s a red herring (fans looking to blame something).

For me, we have to find a way (whether it’s the system, better coaching, mentality, confidence I don’t know) but we have to be able to have a ‘Game Management’ capability, otherwise we won’t be successful.

You can’t expect to dominate and be on the attack for 90 minutes and you have to be able to take the heat out of those periods in the game when the opposition start to gain a bit of momentum.

I’ve referred to it elsewhere, but Peterborough did a great job of that (despite all our fans protestations to the ref) and frustrated any attempts we made to try and get on our game.

You have to be able to make those solidifying subs with a 1 goal advantage late in a game and then see the job through…. If our only defensive option is full bore attack, then we will lose more last minute goals and more 2 points will be dropped this season.

Ann other great blog btw @td53

Superb again. Torturing a dog metaphor sprinkled with on the money observations; indeed Barca didn’t ever give two fucks if Messi didn’t have his man for an oppo corner.

We seemed to run out of steam but was that physical or mental? A lot of energy went into going from 2-0 down to 3-2 up. I think it's about leadership again. Having players who manage the game at the back and in midfield. We don't seem to have those kinds of players. And we are pretty porous. So I think it's a mixture of things. Leadership, system, confidence. Absences. We need a Jackson or a Keogh probably.

Missing Norburn perhaps?

It's a difficult one, because looking at where their goa came from, we lose the ball when we're on the attack and Carey is trying to slot Dembele through... I'm not sure I'd criticise Carey for trying to play that ball and we're not over-committing to the attack at all. I suppose there's an argument to say that we might just look to keep the ball at that stage, but I think that's possibly overly critical really.

It was just a goal out of nothing in many respects... I think our CH's could have done better... Maybe a case of mental tiredness a bit of ring rustiness from EKI perhaps... And possibly Grimshaw might have done better with the save..

The way we started the game is more problematic than how we finished, although again I think I'd put ia lot of that down to us maybe not being 'switched on' as much as anything else.

It was probably down to the three at the back nonsense. It's clearly leaving us wide open. 😉

Especially with Norburn and Virtue missing.

The man in the centre of the back three is getting exposed, and then getting blamed.

No individual to blame for their third IMO. It was a good goal tbf.

Looked more like a back 4 at the time tbh, with Connolly slotting in at Left Back.

We were possibly over-committing midfielders forward at that stage if you wanted to be super critical

I thought Heneghan made a fantastic save at the end, diving away to tip the ball away with his hand. How on earth did we not get a penalty?

There's no denying we were shocking first half, as we were against Posh, with the same midfield. Kouassi is going to look poor when Oakley Booth looks terrified of tackling or playing a ball forward.

Dougall was on his own for that first half.

The team on Saturday should be the side we take to Bolton, to give them time to gel. It won't be though.

Dougs was really good again. I should have mentioned him really, but it was 1am and I wanted to go to bed 🤣

Think that’s the cogs in Shane’s ‘ed whirring away - they do get a bit seized up on occasion though.
