A delve back to times of success at this level when the Pool were looking to reclaim their mantle of being a top flight side once again after 2 previous failed attempts.

One look at the line up v Millwall gave a good indication of brighter days ahead even without the injured maestro Tony Green.

Under the leadership of Les Shannon Pool had started the season in steady if unspectacular fashion and were sat in 9th position on 13 pts 7 pts outside of the top 2 which in old money was a gap of 3 wins and a draw having played 13 W5 D3 L5.

Millwall meanwhile were next to bottom on 8 pts with only one victory to date only and propped up by Aston Villa with an inferior goal difference.

Pool came away with all the points securing a 3-1 victory courtesy of goals from Pickering James and Suddick with one in reply for Millwall from Keith Weller.

4 names their that beg the question how much in today's money in their prime?

Line up.

Thomson.
Armfield.
Mowbray.
Mcphee.
James.
Hatton.
Burns.
Craven.
Pickering.
Suddick.
Hutchison.

Pool of course would go on to lose only 4 more in the remainder of the campaign finally securing promotion on that unforgettable night at Deepdale.

For the record Millwall also vastly improved finishing a respectable 10th.

The point in all of this? It's not always about how you start.

Enjoy the game

What a team that was!

And what magical memories, especially 13th April 1970๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿงก

Was at that match, went on the supporters club coach. As there was no segregation in the ground , we took the relatively safest option and sat in the main stand . Happy days .

To any Millwall fan of an age Keith Weller was a God.

Armfield in his prime is England captain and No.1 player in his position in the worldโ€ฆ so in todayโ€™s money a top top full back and a leader youโ€™re talking ยฃ60 million +

Suddick in his prime, similar sort of player to Grealish I suppose so ยฃ80-ยฃ100 million ?

I always used to say that Glenn Hoddle was the closest thing to Alan Suddick - both had silky skills and were comfortably two-footed, had deft touches and able to ฤictate play and supply sublime creative passes to team mates.

If The King had been born anywhere in South America, rather than Chester-le-Street, he'd have had over 100 international caps.

Without doubt a class team. I remember going to promotion rivals Swindon where we secured a 1-1 draw. Met all the players at a motorway service station on the way home. Great night, great team.

Suddick was a brilliant footballer, but merely a very good player. Delfonse was the nearest to him that I have seen recently, and both had the same shortfall; neither of them wanted to โ€œmixโ€ it. Given time and space they were excellent, but they didnโ€™t always get it.

There's little by way of comparison between Suddick and Delfouneso. Suddick was 10 times the player!

I was lucky enough to see the Suddick wonder goal in an Anglo Italian Cup game at Bloomfield Rd. After receiving the ball from a throw in 40 yards from goal the ball never touched the floor,he was flicking the ball over defenders heads and running past them to flick the ball up again till he smashed a stunning volley from inside the pen area into the net.It was absolutely incredible and it is the Blackpool goal I replay in my mind the most( no video recording of it exists).Almost 50 years later I still cannot believe he did that!โšฝ๏ธ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

Yes, I was there too, one of the very best goals I've seen live or on tv. Unforgettable.
