Money to Spend

So how much do you think from the Jerry deal will be available to Critch?

I would say Sadler will say if he finds a player up to £0.5 million he can have him. Can't see us shelling out much more but I think if there's a club with a decent player who will want a fee that's the sort of money we might have to spend after Jerry's departure.

The less we spend on transfers, the better.👍
Agreed.

I know some fans on here see that as a measure of our ambition but I’d rather we kept our powder dry until we find players who are ‘must have’ and worth stretching to get.

We’ve already seen this summer a group of cracking signings without having to blow millions.

£1m budget could be very handy for paying the academy compensation fees on a clutch of young hopefuls of which one might be the next Bowler

Unless something comes along that's too good to miss....A Richard Keogh type player, I think we will be looking at development loans from some of the bigger clubs in the area.

Wait until Jan and see what we need....Not what most want to hear, but lets see how we get on and then push the boat out to get out of L1

Holloway told Koko he just had to get Charlie Adam to build the team around and it would cost £500k. Koko said “no” so Holloway had to go to Belokon for the funds. That was about 14 years ago. I would like to think we have moved on up a bit since then. Even if down a division for the moment.

I think by this stage of summer unless we are actively tracking and desperate to get a certain player (and the rumour mill has been decidedly quiet) I think a mix of free agents and loans will top up the squad.

Always 'jam tomorrow' following BFC and the fans love it that way. Strange mindset imho but what can you do? 🤷🏻

We do have some fans with bizarre views to spending money on footballers

It was the same when we got promoted to the Premier league and look at how that ended
No, P_bfc deux, the problem back then was the family of tightwads keeping a fiercely tight hold of the purse strings. Proof? Perhaps if I just mention the name James Beattie you'll get some idea of what I'm driving at. Or maybe, given your notoriously selective memory, you've got no recollection of him ...

'... down a division ...', maybe, but blissfully free from the interference of that cack-handed clan the Oystons.

Andy Bayes specifically asked David Downes this question.
Of course he didnt answer it specifically (he'd have been sacked by now if he had) but did say if the right players become available we will be in the market for them.
The "right" players are of course those within our budget.
He also confirmed the Manager has the final say on the deal.

I would've asked the question who those players could potentially be and are we now at the stage of the season where prices get inflated (especially when people 'think' we have the Jerry money) which maybe makes deals unlikely at this stage. The way I see it anyway.

I don't see Critchley in the same 'persuader' mode as Holloway.

So apparently we got £4m for Jerry then spent £1m/£1.5m on Jospeh - two separate deals leaving £2.5m left over. We have been prepared to spend £1m+ before and if the right player comes available I imagine we will again with the rest going towards running costs.

I think he'd had a couple of Chairmen who liked to get involved. Karl didn't really care, as he himself said, so Ollie could do what he wanted, which he liked.
I think you’re spot on with this. As much as KO was a CU he let Holloway crack on with his job and Holloway was able to flourish as a result. No forcing players upon him and no interfering with Holloways fairly unique style. The circumstances created by KO being a tight arse actually helped create the siege mentality and environment that let that specific group of players and Holloway do the unthinkable. Holloways not stupid and whilst KO definitely could have done more for the club and Holloway and could have shown some / any ambition it was his many flaws that ultimately helped create that perfect storm. Completely by chance as opposed to design - but Holloway won’t say a bad word as a result and I think it’s understandable tbf
