Most improved player under Appleton?

Any thoughts .. here's Lancs Live's opinion ...

Jerry Yates

Yates looks like a man with a renewed sense of purpose this season. Out of favour towards the end of Neil Critchley's time at the club, Yates has quickly became the go-to man in the number nine role and that will only grow in the next couple of matches given Gary Madine's suspension.

There are things that Yates can produce, particularly when it comes to his movement and link-up play that other strikers in the squad simply don't possess and Appleton's 4-3-3 system suits him down to the ground. With goals back on the agenda for the former Rotherham forward, confidence appears to be growing and that will only bring about long-term consistency.

Kenny Dougall

Dougall is the definition of what you want to see in a player when adversity hits. A difficult pre-season campaign by his and his Head Coaches admission saw him fall down the pecking order and it looked as though opportunities would be limited, yet he remained determined to fight for his place and after impressive substitute performances, earned his starting spot.

A reliable figure in recent weeks, even during more difficult contests where the midfield were somewhat overran in an unfamiliar system against Blackburn Rovers, Dougall has proven his worth to the unit going forward.

Dan Grimshaw

We all knew it was an inevitability that Grimshaw would be Blackpool's number one this campaign but for Michael Appleton to so clearly define it, it has had the desired effect. Grimshaw suits Appleton's style and it is pleasing to see him able to utilise his ability on the ball rather than bypassing the initial phase of play in a more direct fashion like Critchley requested.

Not Dougal. Plenty of effort. Too many mistakes.

There are a decent number of players who have improved.

As said, Grimshaw, Yates...also Thornilly looks solid but more importantly has been given a chance by MA.
Carey was starting to look the part before that unjustified red card.
Connolly is better this season.

It's as though NCs style was one of rigidity and MAs slightly more relaxed.

The most improved player according to Avftt lore is one we didn’t sign.

In our existing squad, I’m going with Connolly. He’s a defensive midfielder for me and struggled like hell at RB last season. When he played there this season before Jordan was fit, he looked very comfortable- such a valuable, versatile player.

Definitely Dougall. 🍊

I don't think it's Yates. To me, he's the same player ignored by Quitbitch.

It's early doors I know, but I'd say Madine.
Agree with you about Yates he is the same player that was massively underused by Critchley, not improved just being used properly.
As for your comment about Madine let's just say I'm enjoying his 3 game suspension.

For clarity, I'm no Madine fan, but he's been better than he was last season, where his only real input was in defence. This season he's not set the world alight, but he has moved much more and brought players in better.

The question was who has improved, not who is now a worldbeater. Madine has gone, imo from a 5 to a 6/10. Yates was an 8/10, still an 8/10.

I honestly can't think of any other player who has improved beyond natural progression (Dan The Man) who was always going to get better.

I'd argue Marv has stagnated to some extent.

Fair point but I'm hoping we see a lot less of Madine this season.

Dougall has definitely NOT improved under Appleton he’s been well off it so far this season.

Yates has to be the answer to this one, not that he didn’t have the talent but he’s definitely playing better this season then last season under NC.

Agree with that. Replace him with Grimshaw who is becoming one of our main assets - only player you can say we wouldn't be in the top half without him.
I reckon Grimmy has 'earned us' more points than any other player in the side with some of his saves. Although admittedly that is his job (although missed chances and penalties were other player's jobs!).

Given it's such a short period, I guess we could say that they are all the same players and that judgements should be made over a far bigger sample of games.

Jerry might be the same player but may be he now feels like he his wanted as opposed to being rejected ?

I think we probably all want to be wanted and I'd imagine this gives him more confidence and although he might still be the same player, he's the same player but with greater confidence.

Are people saying Jerry because he's just playing more because I didn't see a shortage of enthusiasm and work-rate last season but what we need are goals and so far he only has one tap in on the board.
