Most underrated Bands of all time?

Kenny 😬 Until I discovered some 48 years later that Heart of Stone wasn’t by Kenny but some guy called Tony Kenny (or something similar). There was me buying my first singles including the above along with Fancy Pants and The Bump to realise I’d been duped by Micki Most pulling of a marketing coup and initiating The Great Rock and Roll Swindle,

I find these kind of threads interesting, but a bit hard to join in.
Do we equate ‘rated’ to commercial success?
I’ve always been more into the alternative scenes, so by their very nature they would be under-rated by most, even if they’ve been big in there own genres.
One band I can think of is Dexy’s Midnight Runners - I know they had chart success with a couple of hits, but their early Soul Rebel stuff was mint, well worth more than just being remembered for Geno and Come on Eileen!
Dance Stance. Great track.

you lucky son of a gun
been looking at some of the highlights and they sound fantastic, not sure it's the same anymore withot DG but the new keyboard player is basically a clone.

be interested to see what you think

It was a good gig, all the old favourites plus stuff from the new album. A touching acoustic tribute to Dave Greenfield as the encore. Some of the more subtle songs were not executed too well IMO, Baz generally fits in well but looks much more comfortable doing the new stuff that he wrote. It's quite an eye opener, to think that the audience is my generation, like me they all look so old. Lots of bald pates bobbing about, or perhaps more accurately shuffling about. Good gig and they played for about 80 or 90 minutes. Not quite the same without DG but enjoyed it all the same.

Another one for me was Echo and the Bunnymen who I thought were great
First saw them Lancaster University in January 1983, best band I saw love
With a few of same pals went to watch them on Wednesday just gone in Manchester
Still good but voice nor as strong and more of a show had a great night with dollop of nostalgia, was probably just as pissed

In reply to op I would add their contemporaries, Teardrop Explodes/ Julian Cope

Can't believe I only discovered Talk Talk a few years back

Funnily enough I was at The Teardrop Explodes concert at Lancaster Uni in Jan ‘82 I think it was. Tremendous performance from our Jules as I recall and, definitely, underrated!

Over the years ive probably seen them 40 or 50 times, last time was in madrid about 5 years ago. i think baz does the old stuff well but it is different compared to HC. the last few times ive seen them its also been lots of older guys recreating their youth.

Agree about The Chameleons
I would add The Sound - they made some great music
The La's - they could have been huge but imploded due to Lee Mavers OCD type behaviour
I agree about The Sound . . Adrian Borland RIP was a real talent.

Of more recent bands I'm just listening to the new Metronomy album which is great.

They are reasonably big but they've been around for years and never really had mass appeal despite their music being very accessible.

Saw them at the Phil last Monday Blood. In sparkling form despite Mac having indulged in some form of pre-gig chemical livener that had him talking complete bollix for at least half the set.

I'll go for:

Television
Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes
Doctor Feelgood
Love
Wire

Edit: Forgot to add Julian Cope and the Furs.

Mix it up a bit.

Wire is a great shout, still doing the rounds as well

Different genre but JJ Cale is a big favourite of mine.
Has influenced so many musicians without ever getting popular recognition
