Music download advice

Hello everyone

I'm someone who needs a training course in modern life, I work out how to do something I need and if it works I tend to stick with it so changes/improvements often pass me by. Downloading music being a good example.

The only real access I have to music now is what's on my Ipod Nano. I used to download from Tesco years ago, more recently Amazon instead, bought the album, transferred it to the Ipod and all was well.

Please don't laugh. I don't even get if, as I'm told, the Ipods are now obsolete what are people using to listen to? I don't want to start using my phone particularly, too big.

I don't use the likes of Spotify, don't even fully get how that works or how I'm supporting the artist I'm buying. I've done the occasional single song from a Youtube converter but the quality's awful. I just want to buy an album when I feel like it, which isn't that often, download, stick it on the Ipod and done.

Amazon appears to have changed and, like Itunes, want you to subscribe monthly. I don't buy enough to justify that.

So, if you had to go and buy an album to download as above, where/how would you do it?

Well said that man...All my music - old CDs, downloads, everything - is stored in my Apple library and downloaded to my I-Pod classic (which, like the I-Tunes library) is fast becoming obsolete. I've tried Googling the problem but with little success. What should I transfer the library too? (Which is very large). Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

I rarely buy music these days, I have all the stuff I like. When something new did come along, I used to pay 0.99 to download the tune, but now I cant find any facilty for less than a £7.99 monthly subscription, its a rip off!

To answer your question though, I think a lot of people are now using memory sticks.

I still use iTunes and an iPod. I'd probably say from personal experience its the best way to keep a large library of songs.

You don't have to subscribe to iTunes, that is Apple Music which is similar to Spotify. If you open your iTunes, click on the SEARCH BAR and then select iTunes Store in the topright you can buy and download albums from there.

Once iTunes Store is selected, just use the search bar to search whatever album/artist you are looking to buy. If you have an account with apple linked to your bank details they'll download directly into your library.

Bandcamp is absolutely brilliant. A far higher percentage goes to the artist of what you download than most services. No DRM (so you can copy/back up etc) and you can choose file formats so you can get CD quality not compressed MP3 if you like.

It's maybe a bit more left field than iTunes/Amazon etc in terms of its catalogue but I really like it.

I’m old skool and still buy and listen to CDs and I use Windows Media Player to transfer the albums to my Sony mp3 which I use when on the move or in the car.

I don’t want to use my mobile phone to listen to music and drain my battery when I’m out all day and I replaced my iPod as I didn’t want to use iTunes and Apple.

I have a massive CD collection which is saved to iTunes and I listen to on my laptop. There's enough there to keep me happy.

On the rare occasions when I want to listen to new music I go to the free Spotify streaming service. They play about 30 seconds of adverts every ten or 15 minutes, but it's not that bad for a free service. The artist gets a fee for every listen -- no idea how much.

If you want to download to your phone or other device you have to pay a subscription. I know a few people who do this and are happy with it. If you ever discontinue the subscription you lose access to everything you've saved, which is fair enough, and is a strong incentive to keep paying.

I also have Amazon Prime which allows access to a large library of music, but not the latest albums. They have a paid service similar to Spotify for that.

Thanks for the help everyone. Peel - your shout also seems the best for me, but when I went into Store, it's blank? I thought the band might be too obscure, so I used Maiden instead and it's still blank.

It is probably several years old, the version I'm using but I wouldn't have expected that to make a difference. Do I also need to download the new version?

Just to add, I've now found something that says check for updates, and I have the latest version. So is it just I don't have an account?
