National Service

I read today how many youngsters those leaving education and aged between 18-24 and their prospects in seeking employment, no not the role that we saw decades ago but a national service whereby youngsters can be trained in Nursing, technical trades, police, paramedics, HGV driving and a host of other trades, such as IT, Meteorology, air traffic control etc for a two year period at old military establishments throughout the Uk under the supervision and training of the armed forces.
Paid the minimum wage they would benefit from working away from home, learn a trade or skill and become part of a team.
I am not advocating short back and sides like it used to be however, nor would it be a two year holiday but a chance to learn something that could benefit them in the future and benefit this country long term as well.

Not bad idea - thought it was going to be the old " bring back national service" post by somebody who themselves never did it or kids these days thing

The army has other units not just infantry form nursing, police, engineers along with the Navy and RAF who have branches other than fighting units all who could benefit if some youngster see a future in the military.
We tend to look on our armed forces as front line personnel when in fact they cover many branches that could benefit the young ones in getting started in a career.
The next few years are going to be very challenging times for all of us, the young ones whether those who have gone on to uni or those that have left education with little to show at the end will need more than hope, they will need to be actively engaged and I believe the armed forces could be the
ones to come to the rescue.
Training places and apprenticeships in industry will be hard to come by, we just can't afford to have hundreds of thousands of young people waiting for the tide to turn, it could take a good few years before we are back on track, we need action now, now more dithering.

Not bad in theory, but what would the Army get out of it?
I would imagine that the Army hope some of the apprentices decide that is the life for them. Win win for the Army, recruits who have already had a small taste and like it and have had 2 years trade experience.

Bring it back for Mex and Cat. Employ them in the secret services then feed them duff info to give to their beloved Russia. 😁

One of the main reasons for the Army’s poor personnel retention is the low pay of tradesmen/women relative to their civilian counterparts. The way they overcome this when recruiting is to insist that the potential tradesperson signs on for a set term before they start their training, and extend that term before they begin later stages of advancement trade training. Without this, people would join up, get paid to gain a trade qualification, then leave for higher pay in civvy street.
Another major issue would be a massive drain on the Army’s instructors - they’re hard pushed as it is, and their resources need channeling into those they know will benefit the Army, I.e. serving soldiers.
If those two issues could be overcome, it would boil down to how many young ‘uns could be encouraged to join up, after an experience that couldn’t possibly be anything like the real Army, and considering the huge amount of recruits who already drop out of basic training after spending years of dreaming of being a soldier.
