NEW BLOG SERIES: Liverpool Pubs

MY home town. believe it or not. know the place quite well. last there in 2014. taking Mrs TOM to see Simply Red in 2025. the Philharmonic is a great pub. Paul Mc Cartney did a surprise gig a few years ago.

Can recommend Ye Hole in Ye Wall - it's the oldest pub in Liverpool (from 1726) and is fairly unique in having the cellar upstairs as it's built on the site of a very old cemetery. It's also handy as a starting point for a pub crawl up Dale St to finish at the Ship & Mitre.

In which I go viral, get VERY angry, find a new favourite pub and have the best pie ever.

Me and friends (fellow BFC season tickets) go to Liverpool on the juice most years between Christmas and new year. Our crawl has swapped pubs over that time but regulars are always The Ship & Mitre (best beer selection) and the Roscoe Head (favourite atmosphere). We weren't so struck on the Dispensary this last time (football and rugby shirts all over the walls and too strong beer selection), but the Phil' is back with a bang! Well tarted up, good beers and the atmosphere was great - reasonable food too. I always vote to go in Ye Cracke, both for it's Lennon connections and the War Room. The White Star used to be on our list always. This time it was packed with "Cavern Quarter" revellers, only two ales and no draught Bass! Perhaps we'll give the Hole in the Wall a go next time.

How times have changed😂well from my day.Was at Liverpool University from October 1968 to June 1971.Apart from the Phil and a couple of other pubs near the University itself you were stupid to go into any pub in the heart of the city because some clown would want to either glass you or punch the living daylights out of you if you were as much to look them in the face.
Spending an evening with your eyes staring at the floor was not the most enjoyable of evenings.Thank goodness we had a students only ( supposedly post grads only but they weren’t fussy) bar near our halls of residence at the end of Penny Lane.Think it was called the Greenbank.

in those days most scousers didn’t like university students 😂 maybe they still don’t🤔

Is Peter Kavanargh’s still just off Catherine Street? Top pub or was. Have not been down to Toxteth since my Gran died. She lived off Granby

Thank you! I've added it to my list.

All great pubs! There are so many of them in Liverpool. I already can't wait to go back. Might be back with Chase at the end of the month, depending on what happens in the FA Cup.

Worst still were the pubs down Smithdown Road of which there were plenty on the way back to the Halls of Residence from the Students Union ,now that was scary and you didn’t even have to go into any to know how rough they were.We all learnt how to walk fast and keep stum believe me.
