New highway code

Can’t remember the last time I saw an older bloke, thick or otherwise, tearing about in a noisy BMW with a straight through exhaust, 20/30 mph above the speed limit trying their best to kill anyone who gets in the way. Be it pedestrians, cyclists other motorists, children , disabled or anyone else who happens to be going about their normal business. But hey ho nothing like a prejudiced slant on things.
I’m not talking about boy racers, I’m talking about inconsiderate bully boy drivers.

Here you go… Note the age (Angry man) profile… A classic AVFTT vein bulging type

Just waiting at the traffic lights to turn left into Victoria Road west at Cleveleys, lights go green, I turn left and there’s two people waiting to cross, are we expected to stop in that situation, because if we are, traffic is going to build up massively

Why is a few seconds wait now and then such a big deal to you?

Surely other people’s safety is paramount and not how quickly we get there….And if more people got off their lardy arses and walked or rode a cycle we’d have less traffic build up in the first place.

Try driving with consideration for other people….Let pedestrians safely cross in front, wait until it’s safe to overtake a cyclist, let other motorists push into the space in front of you instead of accelerating to prevent them, leave a good space between you and the vehicle in front….etc…

Your stress levels will drop massively👍

What a ridiculous response, I’m a considerate driver, unlike many of the useless drivers round here, I’m making the point that this potentially is going to cause both frustration and accidents, let alone further damage to the environment with cars sat idling even more. As for getting of my large arse, as you eloquently put it, I walk around 7/8 miles each day, so get off your arrogant high horse.

See what I mean….

You’re clearly a right stress head….if my post has triggered you.

Chill out a bit and read what I wrote, instead of reacting with steam jetting out of your ears.

Deary me…. I wonder if we ought to introduce a stress test for drivers and maybe get a few of you Mr Angrys into some kind of anger management course before releasing you back onto the roads.

Yes, deary me, forgive me for posting something which might just possibly lead to accidents. Just chill out and if they happen, we’ll that’s ok, because I’m chilled and don’t care. The rules are flawed, it’s as simple as that.

Why is it going to cause more accidents?

If drivers actually drive at an appropriate speed and leave enough room to slow if a car does give way to a pedestrian then why should there be a problem. It's only bad drivers that'll cause accidents not the Highway Code.

If these changes lead to more civilised streets then it can only be a good thing for all road users.

The measures are being implemented based on actual research and expert input.... Not from Mr Angry's who are too impatient to pass a bike without nearly knocking them off the road.

Because it’s new and drivers won’t expect the car in front which just pulled a wa from a green light to suddenly stop, equally, some pedestrians will believe they can just step out now, not thinking that the driver might not realise they intend to. I sincerely hope there are no accidents, but it’s a big change which will confuse many.

Then they’ll have to learn to drive like other considerate road users, instead of continuing to drive like knobs….

A few fines and a bit of education should sort it….

It’s better than simply continuing to allow people to drive like dicks, if you ask me.

That's how it's worded, bloody stupid unless it is safe to do so, it certainly shouldn't be compulsory..

C'mon BFC, Mates has a point and the new rule isn't going to do anything to stop those bad/impatient drivers we know are there, bloody 'ell they can't even be courteous toward each other.

Mates opened up the discussion about how shit all the rules were and then proceeded to slste cyclists for other issues, he clearly has a problem with cyclists, which is driving his resentment towards rules, which rightly give cyclists and pedestrians right of way over motorists (it’s been along time overdue).

The bad / impatient drivers will need to be dealt with and fined.

They are basically being asked to drive safely and have a bit of common decency…. Is that to much to ask?

I think we are going to see a lot of impatient drivers now, imagine a busy thoroughfare with no traffic lights or Zebra crossing at a junction, how many pedestrians do you think will stop to give priority to a car? About the same as drivers allowing pedestrians to cross a busy road with no crossing is my guess.

You’re overthinking the situation…. The simple fact is that it’s a positive priority reinforcement. The more motor vehicle drivers are forced to be patient and prioritise others, the better.

Common sense should always dictate that pedestrian crossings exist at high footfall junctions.

As for other drivers rear ending people who stop to let people cross, that’s an issue of driving too close, too fast or without due care and attention.

You’re living in another world if you think everyone, pedestrians, cyclists and motorists are all going to suddenly be model citizens, they’re not, and the consequences could be terrible. It’s a badly thought out law.

I don’t expect them to become model citizens overnight, but I do expect that inconsiderate, angry and impatient motorists will

a) gradually become social outcasts

b) get increasingly punished for bad driving

The law and Highway Code has never prioritised motor vehicles in any case, bad drivers have simply got out of control and assumed that using their vehicle as a weapon entitles them to bully other road users.

What we need now is some very tough prison sentences and lifetime bans for any individual who even attempts to bully or threaten other road users..

In fact driving to close to a cyclist should be treated as attempted murder.

Yeah and the person behind you won’t be expecting it so he’ll go up your arse. What a stupid bloody rule

Shouldn't be too difficult to prosecute these days with a lot of cars having dashcams and cyclists having GoPros and the like.

I imagine in time we’ll be heading for smart ‘driverless’ vehicles in any case… take the idiot factor out of the equation… In the meantime speed limiters, based on speed limits and (driver monitoring cameras) should sort them out.

Wow, watch out drivers, BFC x 3 will report you if your less than 1.5 metres away from cyclists, and expect you to be charged with attempted murder.

“Wow”?

Do you think it’s OK to take unnecessary risks with peoples lives?

You do realise that the cyclists that you are passing dangerously close to are someone’s parent, sibling, child, partner etc.. An actual human being?

You do realise that the motor vehicle you drive poses a significant threat to the lives of other road users and that stepping behind the wheel places significant responsibility on you ?

Lighten up BFC, he was joking.......................................I hope! 😂

Well you’d hope so…. But I genuinely get the impression that Mates (amongst others) genuinely have a problem with passing with a safe distance….

As anyone who’s ridden a bike will know, that kind of unsafe overtaking is one of the biggest issues… It’s plain dangerous

Too right, some years ago I paid my entry for the London- Edinborough-London Audax ride, some doughnut passed so close his wing mirror hit my arm and I lost some use of it that prevented me spending time on the bike and so put paid to those plans.

If a cyclist wants to turn left and theres a pedestrian waiting to cross will it cause a paradox that makes the whole space time continuum collapse into its self ?

The bit that blew me away was that if you are turning off aa main road left, and a pedestrian is waiting to cross, you must stop to let them. Sounds like an accident waiting to happen when someone rear ends you.
Whoever wrote that will never have tried to turn left off the prom into a road during the summer holidays. Could be waiting hours before a gap occurs of someone not crossing. Or any City centre on a Saturday afternoon, bloody stupid and 1.5 meters on most roads would mean you driving on the wrong side of the road to pass a cyclist.
Imagine being late for work or a doctors appointment because you were behind a bicycle riding in the middle of the road all the way down Whitegate drive and Devonshire Rd???..

You should absolutely be driving on the wrong side of the road to pass a cyclist. If you’re not doing so, then you are too close and driving dangerously…

You should treat passing a cyclist just like you would passing another motor vehicle.

If you have a Doctor’s appointment, then you need to get up and set off for your appointment in plenty of time to allow yourself to drive safely and with appropriate care for other road users….

It’s not difficult…

I shall continue to drive like a Gentleman Knight of the Road with due consideration for all….even tubby female cyclists and old Duffers taking ages trying to get across the Road 👍

The best or worst thing about this change is the reaction of all the beetroot heads.

Here’s a quote from the comments section of the daily mirror…

“I hope I get to see some cyclists skulls crushed by HGV’s”

Now if that doesn’t give you a sense why these rules are required and why these folk need quickly removing from behind the wheel I don’t know what will.

Genuine query - everything I’ve read says “when turning left into a side street the vehicle must give way to pedestrians waiting to cross…”, what are the rules if you’re turning right? I don’t recall seeing any mention?

Maybe you can just run them over

Looked into it a bit more, and it seems to apply to both.

I'm assuming you can turn them into roadkill, sorry BFC. 🤡
