Did anyone see this the other week?

  • New funding and beefed-up measures to improve housing standards and drive out unscrupulous landlords
  • Blackpool selected as one of 20 areas in England primed for King’s Cross-style levelling up regeneration and investment
  • Plans will see derelict areas transformed and more good quality homes

Yep, good news IF the money is there, the slum landlords are the number one problem in the town and everyone knows it, it'll be interesting to see what actual powers the new enforcement actually has, as it really needs compulsory purchase of a lot of properties.

Below is part of the town deal.

Revoe Community Sports Village – allocated £6.5m

This project will aid the regeneration of the Revoe area, creating new sports pitches and facilities for communitywide use. It will create investment within the Blackpool FC Bloomfield Road ground and surrounding area. The overall project aim is to provide a sports village with leisure, education, and residential uses. And attract further private investment to the area.

The proposed university is also an excellent idea, universities transform towns.

As always, we'll wait to see if any of this actually happens, but to be fair to the Tories, this is more than anyone has proposed for the town in a generation or more. They'll get my vote if this comes off and makes a real difference as this town matters more than anything else political to me.

Yes. Plans are all well and good, but this will cost money and the Chancellor will need to be convinced it's worth it and better value than money spent in key Southern constituencies. 70% of levelling up money to date has been allocated to those poverty traps of Kent and Worcestershire.

This is great news which hopefully will address the crum housing issues behind the promenade. It does mention protecting vulnerable people and I hope that doesn’t include the dross on benefits who have come into town from other areas in large numbers. Most of them are not vulnerable at all, they’re just a problem that contributes to the poor image the town has in some minds.

Yep, it comes with huge caveats as suggested.

Perhaps it's the new Northern Powerhouse....another pile of bugger all for Blackpool. The Tories have been in office for 12 years and only now decide that communities need levelling up. In any case, levelling up to who?

Yep, there's lots of good things happening, not all linked to them but a lot is proposed and will make a big difference, can only judge them on that and if it comes off.

This is why I dont get why people get all hung up on a political party. They can all at times do shit things, at times ones policy will work out better than another.

They haven't had an easy hand to be fair with brexit a tricky issue to sort, but then a pandemic, supply issues cost of living crisis and the war affecting things.

I don't have any loyalty to any party, just whichever seems the best at the time given our circumstances.

The levelling up agenda sounds good, but now is looking like it may have actual legs. People will say well Labour would give more etc, but we can only judge the past and what we have proposed.

The main thing is its about time some of these issues were addressed and its looking very promising for Blackpool, am excited to see a lot of the projects, not all are linked to this funding.

We have the cinema complex in town, tennis pavilion on Stanley Park refurb, tree planting ongoing, the revoe masterplan including the east stand, sports village and central drive refurb, new houses, streets, which leads onto the Blackpool Central, with new attractions and hotels, restaurants etc.

We have new shop fronts all over town, including ones at the winter gardens, some street improvements and a new conference centre. The street improvements done look good, for eg Edward Street near the market back entrance, thr market itself is being done up and thr cedar tavern pub is being done up with name change.

We have the airport enterprise zone expanding, new road, businesses and sports pitches.

The multiversity in town, the Stanley building refurb, illuminations upgrade, the tram town tours are looking to improve that experience but need monet first for a new roof then can add a cafe etc to make a better attraction.

5 star hotel and museum, Talbot gateway including new tram hub, hotel and restaurant. Even the ambulance station is being upgraded near the gurkha.

As well as some more mentioned on here and some other stuff from standard investment and improvement.

Plus probably stuff I've missed.

There's a lot happening.

My old mum was tasked with chasing up slum landlords back in the early 1990's. She said it was pretty much an impossible job as they were simply uncontactable. I doubt it's changed much. Councils need the power to arrest these properties within very stringent timescales and either flatten them or have them auctioned off for renovation. This would be a winner for the council and the town. But regulations need to be put in place. If they can strip Russian oligarchs of all their properties then it's time to do the same in Blackpool.

Positive news in the OP. Lets see what happens.

The Northern Powerhouse moved out of Sheffield to London. Says it all.

Hope it happens. I love Blackpool but i have to admit it is a tired and rough place at the moment, not the Blackpool I remember from my childhood (but it’s possible I just didn’t notice then!).

It's on the up in the next years, some big projects and changes.

Changing perception is key, which is why the focus on the town centre and tourist areas is important.

Moving workers into town will help with footfall and the 'multiversity' will too. Shops, restaurants doing better only strengthens the town.

I believe there's less and less people leaving to be replaced by other towns scum.

Greening up areas, there's a lof of quick wins to be had with verges etc where you can transform the look of an area relatively quickly.

The deep problems will take longer and will always be elements of it, but can be reduced and at least taken out of focus, not on display, bad areas made to look more welcoming.

Yes, it's easy to see the depth of the squalor but that doesn't mean we shouldn't act. I've seen streets in other towns/cities that I thought needed to be bulldozed but they've been brought back to life looking great. It needs the investment, the ideas and the willpower.
