Ha - for me it’s melody riffs and structure and the lyrics come last - lyrics are the easiest part - before I could play guitar I used to write songs the other way round though

I like Jello Biafra’s approach - he can’t play guitar so hummed / sung the song and melodies to East Bay Ray (guitar) and Klaus Flouride (bass) and they worked it out ….

That said when it all went to court over copyright of the band’s back catalogue East Bay Ray won the case …. and hence the Fake Dead Kennedys were born … as if there aren’t enough tribute bands
