NEW SIGNING - Callum Connolly

Had four solid seasons in the Championship at CB with Wigan (x2), Ipswich, and Bolton.

Will be a solid option in the backline.

Hopefully Critchley doesn't see him as a replacement for Turton, because we need a true RB to fill in, not someone who plays across multiple positions.

Played games at this level earlier in his career on loan at Wigan and Ipswich. Then got loans a division down, which seemed a bit strange. But captained and been outstanding for Fleetwood over the past couple of years.

Made me chuckle from Everton's forum:

Becoming a mini Everton, Bowler, Garbutt and lavery all there now

And Callum Connolly has just signed for Blackpool

just seen that, i think i might support blackpool while the fat kopite is our manager

Again Critchley talking about his "attributes, character and values" first and foremost. 23 and captain of FWTFC while on loan suggests he is right. I don't want to get over excited, but I am 100% a believer that the "right" group of players beats the "better" (or more expensive) group more times than not.

So I think I am getting over excited about what the club are doing here!😍

And: "Not forgetting ex Everton defender Jordan Thorniley who played regularly last season for Blackpool."

That Everton forum discussed Lavery and Bowler signing for us too:

Lavery:
"A good signing if they got him for free, but for me I’ve never seen him as good as Simms at comparative ages, Lavery was sharp in the box, had good pace , and scored frequently but not in a stand out way when with us , so never made any big impact at u18/ 23 . He seems to have grown a bit , I always saw him as small and speedy maybe he’s added height and weight . Another one that we shipped out to Scotland for a loan that didn’t work. I’ll take Simms to score more goals than him in the Championship next year if that’s where he ends up too."
"Big step up from playing Irish league football, although he had done well in European qualifiers last summer for Linfield. I still reckon they will try to sign Simms on loan again."

Bowler:
"5 million down the toilet as Josh Bowler is sold to Blackpool on a free ......rated highly by Unsworth many clubs were in for him we got him = we wasted him on loan to be the understudy to a winger West Ham paid millions for .... Another young prospect bites the dust......
"He never got a chance though ...... rave reviews part of a winning youth team title outstanding season .... not one substitutes game even .....
"i'm not disagreeing with you per se, just pointing out he got injured at bad times which happens a lot of our players. it makes me laugh when our young players talk of a pathway when it doesnt exist. there has been a massive disconnect between the academy and the first team which happens when you have 5 managers in 5 years and brands needs to sort it out."
"Good player that Bowler. Watched him a few times and was always impressed."
"Youve just signed a cracking winger from us for nowt Josh Bowler - grr"

Very pleased with our recent signings including Callum Connolly. Young hungry players with potential. If anybody can help them develop it is Critchley. Good to think we could have signed some exciting talent.

Described as a player that can play anywhere across the back four and in the midfield, but from what I can see his is mainly a RB which is definitely a position we're lacking in at the minute.

Could do with another IMO, but very glad to have made some progress in that position at least

Mainly a CB/CM I believe.

Maybe he's never been properly coached at right back?

A lad who's always out on loan might not always have the luxury of one position.

I don't think he's a right back, most of his games to date have been at CB or in CM. Latterly CB, with Fleetwood.

Just gandered at Fleetwood's lineup's last season and he played CB, swear I read he's a right back but must be mistaken!

Certainly covered in that position then now we have Ekpiteta, Gretarsson, Thorniley, Casey, Connolly and you can probably include Husband in that list as that's where he's been playing.

OK. Was expecting something sarky not a well-reasoned post. I agree but we are lacking at right-back.
Except the wiki entry that says he can play all across the back line is apparently a bit of an exaggeration. He's more a CB or CM, so not likely to play RB much if at all. Therefore isn't Turton's replacement.
