New sporting Director is David Downes

Maybe he'll stay there if they win?!
As said before, it was known they were in the promotion hunt, so would be weird if now he isn't.

But he's head of recruitment there, he'll be sporting director here so presumably on more and a bigger role here?

He wouldn't come unless there was an incentive. Money tends to sway people.

I think SS has analised this situation extremely well, he now realises he requires someone who can focus on recruitement & nothing more, has good past experience & the new man will concentrate on bringing the right players into the squad. Also SS has organised the other guys to take care of finance etc by all accounts. He could'nt have done this any better, this all makes sense. The toolheads on here will no doubt scrutinise every move, ,any opportunity to criticise Mr Downes will appear soon, sad to say . Incidently we made offers/enquiries for one or two Sheff Wed players this past 12 months !
'... analysed ...' Sorry, FBF, but, if left uncorrected, I fear this is could have conjured up all manner of questionable images in the minds of the less-balanced individuals who frequent this site...

Still no announcement then? I would have thought that one lesson learned on this site, would be never to expect until there's been an official announcement.

You are the daddy off this forum nuffing gets past you it is appreshited. Thanks what would we do wivout you,
Tarantula is it any relasion.

Why? Assuming it is him perhaps he’s serving his notice and I’m sure we wouldn’t get in the way of him savouring his moment with the MASSIVE. But who knows 🤷‍♂️
And, if he does eventually come, just to help with the inevitable period of transition, in order to make him feel at home, as a club could we not perhaps take on the slightly rejigged mantle of the Mahoosive?

It reads to me like he has been offered the job but hasn't taken it yet but looks like he will. Of course things can change so if Wednesday make him an offer to stay now they have been promoted that he can't refuse he could stay. That's how it goes sometimes. We'll hear by next week I would guess one way or the other. If he comes great, if not then we are behind again and need to find someone.

I still maintain that Critchley would excel as DoF, with SD as team coach. And, to be honest, I was expecting a mini-drama surrounding any new ‘Sporting Director’ (which I also still think is a crappy, effete sounding title).

Critchley is a fantastic coach and he loves being on the pitch working with players. Why would he want to be in an office instead ????

I wonder if our penchant for appointing former managers applies to Sporting Directors and we will get Badlan back? 😂😂😂👍👍

Just give it to Gary 😁
He knows the club and area.
Gaz Goals?

“Oway, ya can have a canny crack here if you come. Chinese chicken and Jordan’s designer shorts he’ll make for you for on the beach wit the birds”

“Not enough money? If ya don’t sign if ** ya, ya fanny”

Give it Gaz!!!!

Well, for the very simple fact that he wouldn't be in an office for longer than necessary !!!! Team managers also have offices for the use of, but rarely spend too much time in them either. But none of this should divert the discourse away from hertfordseasisder's comment, to which I fairly responded.

Let's have it right - how many of us actually knows what a 'Sporting Director' does?
Try this job description.

The sport director is responsible for managing the club's coaches, players, and other staff members, as well as for developing and implementing strategies for improving the club's performance. One of the main responsibilities would be to hire and manage the club's coaching staff.

You mean what the Chairman did/does but is now a sporting director that relinquishes responsibility from the moneymen?

It's a good job we didn't wait for the Sporting Director to be in post before appointing the Manager, because we would have been left at the starting post.
I still cannot get my head round why the SD had to be here first, unless he was involved in the Manager's appointment, which obviously was not the case!

Doesn't sound great. Huddersfield have been a mess recently so I can't imagine why we would want to replicate that or hire the guy responsible for that.
Nobody saying that when he plucked Carlos Coberan from the Leeds coaching team and they got to the play-off final …

You could say the same about Ben Mansford and picking Critchley. However, what has happened since Critchley/Corberan left is a catalogue of errors and mismanagement that has left one club relegated and the other previously on the cusp of relegation. Hardly great management or recruitment.

Maybe … and hear me out here … maybe it’s not an easy job?
Of course not and that is why they are paid big bucks. When you are paying for a DoF you surely want someone who is actually good at the job and is more likely than not going to steer you in the right direction?

Perhaps it’s difficult for any director of football or chief executives to be consistently successful with one of the smallest budgets in a financial arms race league like The Championship.

No doubt you’ll be able to tell me all about, for example, the ownership instability at Huddersfield last season, or what happened there three weeks before the season started?

Tell that to Luton.

I wonder what the craic is with David Downes? I wonder if Critch sees things differently and there's a change of plan?? Or has Downes decided to stay after promotion? Or is he just working his notice?

It does make you wonder and it seems to be a recurring theme at the club.

Did the statement from Sadler not say the bloke was already here and would be revealed when the time was right or something to that effect?
Sadler said he had been appointed and would be announced “when we are able to do so” - god knows when that will be. If it is Downes it seeme to be taking forever, Sadler made the announcement on May 3

Probably the above, most likely they'll require 3 months, but might let him go early once his replacement is in place.
